The Times: "Brixton: the depressing symbol of Britain's multicultural failure"

1. Did you ask every person by turn what their class was, or is this simply your prejudice.

2. You do realise that this is an utterly moronic thing to say, do you not? As Crispy says, are you going to list your 'ethnic' friends now?

1 it was easy to judge them as they were all standing around and talking at the top of their voices.

2 No i didnt realise that.....Perhaps i need to be re-educated.

I wont list all my effnic friends for you but i will just mention some of my best friends aernt Black.

Never been to Fujiyama, but as far as the Academy goes, maybe it's more down to the group that's playing that evening that attracts the people, rather than any particular "racial divide" enforced by some kind of demographic?
Absolutely. I was only saying this to underline what someone said earlier about people of different cultural backgrounds choosing to spend their time in different ways.

I just read the article again and its 95% rubbish. The true bit is the relative lack of integration in Brixton .....but relative compared to where?

True. But what makes areas like Brixton different is the large number of people who moved in activelly wanting to live in a racially diverse area.

I can honestly say I've never met anyone who matches that description.

I have, actually.

I certainly can think of several people for whom the cultural diversity was at least a contributing factor in drawing them to/keeping them in Brixton.

I'm sure people are also drawn to other parts of London for similar reasons though.

Or to put it another way - if you delibrately avoid living in an area of cultural diversity you are more likely to be a twat. I'd rather live amongst people who fall outside that category (although they might of course fall in other less savoury categories).

If that makes sense.

Outside the category of the deliberate avoiders = inside the category of people who choose to live in Brixton.

I'm feeling generous

- I have never seen a black person shopping in tescos
- I have never seen a black person at the Academy
- I have never seen black people in "white restaurants"
- I have never seen white people in "black restaurants"

=> I have no close black friends

After reading the article in the OP, I have a strong feeling which of the above is applicable

What I'm also not clear about is how exactly the "less savoury" categories intersect with the sets of those who choose to avoid living in Brixton and those that avoid not living in Brixton.

Well, venn diagrams are crap at showing multiple relationships, unfortunately :(

And I think I'd need another few spatial dimensions to fit ajdown in.

Bit judgemental? A lot of people prefer what is familiar to them, which is quite natural. Cos you prefer to mix with different cultures does that make you automatically a better person than an Indian living in Southall or a White person living in Southend?
I don't think so.

I've had a long weekend and I've come back to Urban to find I agree with ajdown.

I think it's going to be an odd week.

It's a lovely venn diagram, crisps: don't you let them put you down!

I've been quite pleasantly surprised by him on this thread. Did I miss something?

Also when I moved to Brixton when I was a young slip of a lass its cultural mix was a bit of pull for me. Mostly it was because it was far away from where I had been, one of the few zone 2 places I'd been to before, it was convenient for work and closer to a boyfriend of the time. But also because when I had been clubbing here before I remembered there were lots of pretty boys. :o
