The Third Division Thread (League One 08/09)

Swindon lost at Cheltenham who have signed a couple of decent players on loan - Hayles, Fleetwood and Myrie-Williams. Cheltenham possibly aiming to not have to pull off a miraculous escape this year. Anyone else have a suspicion Swindon could struggle?

I seriously doubt it. We've got the best side we've had for years and we're playing decent football.

How we lost yesterday is anyone's guess. We dominated the game and had enough chances to kill Cheltenham off, but their keeper kept them in it on a few occasions.

Disappointing, but only a temporary setback I'm sure.

That's the chap. We could/should have been 3-0 up before they scored their first. Such a contrast from last week when we took our chances.

One defeat away from home isn't the end of the world though, and I'm still quietly optimistic for the season ahead. Our first choice centre halves have still to come back yet, they just need to get match fit. I'm sure Malpas will make a few changes for Colchester on Saturday.

"you're only here to see the ginger pele"

i know it doesn't scan. i couldn't give a shit. :D
watch it - we might buy him off you.... :D

probably our worst performance at home last season was on new year's day when we lost to oldham. so....

8 months later, after an encouraging start to the season I was expecting much better on saturday. but if anything we were even worse - in fact I really can't remember the last time we played so badly. at least we got a consolation goal last time, but I don't think we seriously tested the oldham keeper on even one occasion this time. we should have had a blatant penalty in the second half when gregan hauled down showunmi, but on the day we'd probably have missed it....

fair play to oldham and I hope it was just a blip for us - but at least it should be a wake up call to those people who have deluded themselves into believing that we'll walk this league. there's a long way to go....

btw - what's that oldham kit all about? do they train in the dark or something? :)

the stewards I saw were wearing orange not yellow so maybe that guy is colour blind...

I agree with the comments about messrs sheridan and wright though.

and it is an absolutely hideous kit! :D

fuck me, biggest win in 9 years

Hereford were terrible, they're going straight back down if today was a measure of their quality. We took almost every chance we had, Duffy's first two goals for the club were both quality. Lambert scored a couple of belters too. Fuck it, all six were corkers :D

Hereford came out early for the second half to warm up. Good thing they did, otherwise they may have held out for even less time than the two minutes it took us to score number four :D

Lambert scored direct from a free kick to put us five up, he was taken off straight away and minutes later we had another free kick on the edge of the box. Chris Lines stepped up, I thought 'oh no, not him' and he popped it in off the underside of the bar.

I feel a lot better about our season after that. Even having second thoughts about going to Leeds next week :hmm:

Last time we won by five was when we romped home 5-0 at the Manor Ground in January 2000

Biggest victory since the 6-0 win at Reading in January 1999

Biggest home win since beating Wigan 6-1 in March 1990

Last time the Rovers won by a greater margin at home was when we beat Bradford City 7-1 at Eastville in September 1971!

You don't get many days like this with our lot :)

Jeez, I've got to get out of working Saturdays :(

I know a few people who missed that :(

Hereford's defence was rubbish, all over the shop. Even so, last year we may have struggled to beat them but now we have a couple of players who have a clue about where the goal is and who can get the best out of Rickie. Once the floodgates had opened, there was no stopping us.

Jo Kuffour signs this week apparently. We'll have attacking players coming out of our ears :D

The Foxes are still looking good for promotion just hope they keep it up.

They should do. They've kept a number of decent players (well, supposedly decent... they did manage to achieve relegation) and have made some fantastic signings. As results are already showing, I suspect they're far better equipped for promotion than Leeds. Oldham are also going to be up there, I think (and not just based on their 3 in 3).

I am a bit worried about our season now. First couple of games we took our chances & scored goals. The last 2 games we've really not (and both were against fairly poor opposition too).

great game at elland road last night against crystal palace. Gary Mcallister made 8 changes to his underperforming team - including 16 year old Aidan White making his debut at left back and 17 year old fabien delph in central midfield - and we bossed the game. maybe it was just the magic of the cup but it'll be interesting to see who's in the starting line-up for the league match on saturday.

we are giant killers.... :)

Me and you both mate. Our defence is looking decidedly dodgy at the moment. We've still been creating chances though, in fact on Saturday some of the crosses McNamee and Marshall were putting in were as good as I've ever seen. Nobody was getting on the end of them though. If only we had a Parkin.

Oh, and it looks like Corr is going out on loan to Bournemouth. So much for wrapping him up in cotton wool.

So, apparently Jo Kuffour signs for us tomorrow subject to a medical. Attacking player, scored plenty of goals in struggling sides in this division (Torquay, Brentford, Bournemouth), will be interesting to see how he does in a side which hopefully won't be struggling.

We scored 6 on Saturday, half the goals from new signings and both our main strike pair got two. Now we sign another attacking player... Given that last season we all knew our problems lay up front - we averaged about a goal for and against per game all season - this is a very promising development

Two tough games now though - Elland Road and London Road. Both sides are below us in the league at the moment, hopefully in a fortnight it'll still be the case.

Just got back from Leeds. Went one down early on to a deflected shot - which was doubly annoying considering that was how they beat us there in the last minutes last season - and looked a bit shaky for the first twenty minutes. Got back into the game and scored twice around the half hour to shut them up and create bedlam in our corner. Could have gone 3-1 up late on in the first half.

Second half they forced us deep, couldn't get it away for more than a couple of minutes at times, and their equaliser was on the cards for a while as we started looking a bit flakey. Still annoying to concede it, 2-1 up away from home you hope to put the result away really.

Thought it was a fair result in the end. Leeds will win more than they lose this season, so will we, but I can't see them running away with anything. They'll be up there though.

Elland Road stewards were fantastic, really friendly and helpful. Leeds fans to the left of us were a bunch of tits, trying to be menacing but very very quiet when we were in front. Saw some kid making monkey gestures at Aaron Lescott from the family seats. Good day out though.

Rickie Lambert has five in four league matches now. This season could be interesting now we can score goals :)

On reflection I thought we let Leeds come onto us too much second half. We decided to sit on the lead, it wasn't far away from paying off but I can't help feeling trying to put more pressure on them may have been better.

Would be interested in what Leeds fans on here thought :)

I thought it was a fair result. Possession wise we should have walked it but we didnt create many chances against some solid defending. I thought Rovers were far better organised than last season and stuck to their task when Beckfords shot deflected in for our 1st goal. At that point I thought we would walk it.

Leeds gave two silly goals away through bad marking and a ridiculous challenge from Douglas which led to the free kick for the second goal. After that we were chasing the game and vulnerable to the counter attack.

Personally I dont think Leeds have got going yet and we've yet to see Macca's best side. I'm just glad we are passing the ball on the floor and not hoofing it goalwards which we did far too much of last season. We kept passing the ball and deserved our equaliser.

Swansea and Donny proved last season that you can get out of this league by playing football hopefully we will do the same.

I'm glad you enjoyed your day but are you serious about the Leeds stewards being friendly:eek: ?!

it's still not looking good at elland road is it? :(

macca stuck with most of the players who demolished crystal palace, but what a difference a few days makes. after getting a flukey early goal they decided to stroll through the rest of the first half (lots of pretty sideways passing but little attempt to actually threaten the opposition goal) and then went to sleep twice in 5 minutes to gift rovers 2 well-taken goals. in the second half we kept their 10 man defence under constant pressure and got a deserved equaliser but at the end of the day it was 2 more points dropped.

more ominously I'm beginning to think that macca doesn't really know who his best 11 are or what his preferred formation is. this was the third new central defensive pairing in three games and we had 3 players playing out of position. dunno why ankegren was dropped either.

next up we've got another home game in the JPT against bradford (9.5 on the Leeds-hating scale) - so it would be nice to win that, but it's the league that counts and so far we've been disappointing....

Seriously they were really nice. Bloke on the turnstile went out of his way to explain the barcode thing, blokes on the stairs were friendly when checking the ticket/seat numbers etc, wished us a good trip home on the way out.

I was gobsmacked :D

In fairness i think that defeat has made something snap, they were a totally different team in the 2-0 win over Crewe Alex on saturday than i had seen lose against Yeovil the week before the Bristol stuffing. If we play like we did against Crewe we could hope for the giddy heights of a mid-table finish otherwise it will be league 2 football next year.

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the return of Andy Williams to Edgar Street can't work out whether he'll be booed or cheered.
