The Thatcher List of Shame

Bus de-regulation and privatisation outside of London in 1986.

<bit anoracky but there you go ;) >

Abolition of GLC and Metropolitan County Councils.
London Dockland Development Corporation.

I heard she has been diagnosed with dementure, and she keeps forgetting her husband isn't alive anymore.

Let's imagine she forgets all the things she did when she was in office. I'll start the list off:

*Poll Tax
*Doubling of unemployment
*Banning of sympathy strikes
*Cuts in funding to higher education
*Abolished the GLC
*Section 28
*Ending of universal free school milk
*Increased charges for school meals

What were her other..."achievements"?

Presumably you meant dementia not "dementure"

It's amazing just how many of these policies were reversed by Labour when they got into power. Now there was....... Or maybe....... - nope they're perfectly happy with her adjustments to British Society and economics, thanks.....

Hey Cobbles, just cos we're perhaps having a wry chuckle at Thatcher's suffering  and listing all the shit she did, doesn't mean we're fans of Labour. <puke>.

Which cunt was it that privatised BR and thus provided a perpetual inflated income stream for incompetent franchise directors?

OTM. I think it was either her or Major, but Bliar and Brown have perpetuated it.

I'm a bit young to remember her time in office, but did she set a precedent for the Bliar-Bush arse-licking with her relationship with Reagan?

But if it was all so transparently evil and wrong why couldn't the Labour party get elected on a program that would reverse them?

You mean the 1983 and 1987 elections?
Cos by the time of the 90s, there had been a sea change in Labour.

Oh now Margaret dear, this is the cupboard under the sink with the rat poison, you wouldn't want to stir some into your cocoa thinking it was sugar would you.

According to this, free or subsidised milk is available at school:

Q: How much milk can my child receive and what is the cost?

A: Up to 250ml of whole or semi skimmed milk can be subsidised via the EU,(for ages 5-11 years) however most school milk cartons are available in 189ml (approx. 1/3 pint). The cost varies from area to area. If subsidised, a carton of milk can cost 13-18p per day, this being charged to the parent.

Q: Can my child receive FREE milk?

A: Children under 5 years of age can receive free milk (up to 189ml per day) through the Nursery Milk Scheme administered via the Department of Health through the Welfare Food Re-imbursement Unit.

Children are eligible each day they attend an approved Day Care provider for 2 hours or more. The Provider is required to be registered with the WFRU in order to claim back the cost of the milk supplied.

Milk can be provided free to children who qualify for free school dinners, however not all LEA’s offer this provision. It is advisable to check your child’s eligibility through the school or Local Education Authority.

In Wales, free milk is available to all children between the ages of 5-7 yrs. This free milk is funded through the National Assembly for Wales.

I can't think too many would actually drink it though.

Our representatives are now trying to force nationalised rail in countries in the EU to privatise. Fucking shame, nationalised rail is amazing, I know its not the most important thing but it does make life a hall of a lot easier.

(Waves fist at neo-liberal scum.)

many turned to alcohol and other drugs.
:D WTF do you think they were doing before?

It's the kids of the miners I feel sorry for; having to find other jobs, perhaps staying at school longer than the minimum, maybe even facing the horrors of university, little or no chance of emphysema and chronic bronchitis, having to consider there is a world outside the pit village . . . nightmares like opportunity, aspiration . . .

Introduced monetarism, a theory which she didn't understand, which didn't work even on paper, and had already failed by any standards when experimented with in Chile.

You don't actually know what you're talking about, do you? When the pits were closed, the miners, their families and the towns they lived in were effectively abandoned. Closing a mine should have meant taking responsibility for the communities (and this overused word is appropriate here) that only existed because of the mines. Thatcher did no such thing. On yer bike was cunt Tebbit's best suggestion. Many towns in the South Wales valleys still haven't recovered.

Your glib tone is misplaced.

mmmm, thatcher...made the UK competitive...the city being THE financial centre for everyone to come and work... I'm not working working with an egyptian guy, a french guy and an irish girl...and i thank mrs t for that....if it wasn't for her all these people would live somewhere else

Of course! And everyone in the Valleys is just sooo much happier now, aren't they?

Ever taken a look outside of the square mile old chap?

1. Mining was (and is) subject to the health and safety law same as any other industry.

2. There's no more vital work in a high tech society, which you, mate, take full advantage of, than digging up coal, sucking up oil or burrowing out uranium. Don't like it? Wind your computer up by hand before posting. Lots of the workers in the mining industry were pretty well educated, mate, as is fitting in a technical set up.

Oh and to add to the List of Shame - select committees.

Saved, apparantly, as Ed Sec, the OU. Was instrumental in the MSC grants that gave us the Macc Lads.

so not all bad then.

My sister in law works with the long term unemployed in Merthyr and the area is still fucked up a quarter of a century after the strike.

I don't like saying I hate someone but as God is my witness I hate that woman.

The fantabulousness of making the UK economy dependent on the financial services industry and the property market is clear to see, cos those 2 economic sectors built on sand were never going to wobble and crash were they. :hmm:
