The Surrey Thread

It's on the Kingston loop most trains go out of Waterloo via Wimbledon and back via Richmond, or obviously vice-versa. Some trains also go out on a little twig line to Sheperton and back.

No it's definitley a branch

I'm off to Surrey in the morning (well Hampton technically the now defunct Middlesex) I'll wave to you all :):)

Kingston is a borough to itself. It has a London postcode (SW15 for Kingston Vale) and the Surrey County Council head office .
Geographically it's isolated. To the north is Richmond Park, to the west is the Thames and to the south and east is the mighty A3.
The latter leaves poor old Chessington in a grey area but judging by the number of fine old Kingstonians who have been sent there by Kingston's housing department, it's still a part of the town's spiritual life.

Can you explain to me why it's a branch station?

Because I must be thick.

Addington is south of Croydon Proper and has a horrible housing estate, but also some dead posh houses. And a palace. Which is also a golf course and hotel and popular venue for marriages.

Is new addington (shudders) far enough away from addington village to not be a threat?

Because it deals only with local trains on a line that only has trains that do short distance commuter trips. Subiton on the other hand is on a line that serves such exotic places as Portsmouth and Basingstoke. It has big fast trains going beyond the London commuter belt, some of which even deign to stop.

You can see the maps here

The "mainline" ones appear on the "London and South East" map whereas the small London branch lines can be seen on the "London Connections" one.

Reading is on the mainline out of London Paddington going to Exeter, Cardiff and Birmingham, so it is mainline fo' so'

It is also in Berkshire, so maybe you should start a different thread! :p

Don't bother, it won't be long before the Surreyites annex Berkshire too.

[*]Surbiton was famous for the popular sitcom 'The good life'

Another Surrey-based BBC comedy, Terry and June, was set in Purley. However, the external sequences were actually shot in Cheam.

On another note, The Stranglers were originally named The Guildford Stranglers.

The Surrey Iron Railway was the first public railway in Britain in 1803, running from Wandsworth to Petlake at West Croydon and Merstham from 1805. There is (was?) a small section of rail in the grounds of Wallington Library.

Not really true. Most of Kingston and the surrounding area from Walton to Epsom and beyond has a KT postcode.
I meant just the bit beyond the university on Kingston Hill
(as an example of the Kingston straddle).

I went to boarding school near Guildford and spent many a Saturday afternoon in the 3 Pigs, is it still there?

I really liked it in Surrey

I spent the odd Sat afternoon in the 3 pigs at a certain point in the late 80s and early 90s.

Guys

Nice to meet you.

I noticed at the start of this thread Guildford Cathedral being described as ugly.

I am sorry that you don't like it - it was no small struggle to build it through the Depression and the Second World War, only being completed in 1961. While it is quite spartan, it sought to learn from and maintain the English gothic tradition. It is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, with fabulous interiors, and as much stonework as there was money for. It was designed by Sir Edward Brantwood Maufe, not as famous as he should be, and contains many artworks by prominent artists of the period.

Look at any other churches you may have, completed in the 1950's and 60's. If they are still standing, they are probably junk building. This is not another steel framed mall or nasty tin shed, this was built for the millenia. Maybe it shouldn't have telephone antennae on it, maybe its surroundings are less than impressive, but if you live in Guildford, imho you should treasure this building. If this is flattened or torched you won't get it back anytime soon.

Cheers

David
