The sun-dried tomato appreciation thread

This is almost 100% wrong :D

Last time I ventured the opinion I was pointed to the war and post war austerity that saw the traditional english cuisines being made with increasingly bad ingredients and hence a whole dissatisfaction with it.

Don't know how true that is either:hmm:

You probably think that Italian cuisine is peasant food.

I wonder what a lasagne made with lamb keema and peas would be like. With paneer on top.
I went to visit my Mum recently, and she made curried lentil lasagne with feta on top. It was rank. Ranker than rank. And I don't care if she does sign up here and read that.

typical modern m/c veneration of european cuisine. Only as far back as Tolkiens era the upper classes venerated traditional english foods. It was only when increased circumstances meant even plebians could have big portions of spotted dick that the bourgeoisie went further afield in their endeavors to establish a cultural superiority via foodstuffs.

Yeah and once you could buy pineapple rings in your local bejam then new poncey food that you could impress the fellas with had to be bought!

Dotcommie makes perfect sense and his mum is hot!

Pre-war, it was all about French food, as it had been for many decades, maybe even centuries. The best families had French cooks, the best Gentlemen's Clubs had French chefs (Cf Alexis Soyer at the Reform Club). The French were revered as superior to the English at food for decades. Still are. The recent "Bring back traditional British food!" cry is a bit misleading. The upper classes never really embraced it in the first place.

Hawaiian toast. I learned to do that at school. It's like cheese on toast, but with a pineapple ring on top. I thought that was very exotic at the time. (1978).

I think at one point i'm right in saying that the humble pineapple was worth more then its weight in gold.

Is it any wonder the toffs have to invent a new bling vinegar every month to counter the fact that even kerry katona puts pineapple on her gammon these days.

Alot of Italian foor from Puglia, Basilicata, Campobasso, Calabria, Molise and Campania is'was historically poor/peasant food. Those areas are still generally very poor areas. Pugliese food is 'famous' for ot having m,uch cheese because the land wasn't conduicive to rasing cattle or sheep so mass produced milk wasn't readily available and as such cheese was only for thos rich enough to pay for it.
