My votes...

soniccathedral/twinkle

Nice mellow feel, a bit Underworldish - in a good way, love the way you've played out the delays, I could see this developing further to enhance the key changes.

7/10

umbrellasounds/end of the summer

Twisted and mechanical, like the fractured percussion sounds, and the pads are great, nice production too, seems to lack a determined breakbeat or something though - keep expecting a rough rhythm to kick in.

6/10

wintermute/blade

This is cool, it's like a movie soundtrack, the bass keys sound like a film I've heard, then the chords come in and it all comes together. Really nice production and separation. I'm not a fan of high pitch vocals, too many memories of the old hardcore days, but in this context the sample works well.

7/10

funkyken/telectro

Ah, a nice proper bit of house beat, decent.
Sounds a bit distorted, especially the low end and the extreme highs, but that's OK.
Like the samples, the transformed horns especially.
I've played this kind of thing out before and if the distortion was a little less I'd play this out no problem.

7/10

je5/Lix Tetrax

Some really amazing sounds, nice technique here with the drum programming, must have taken ages to get those hi-hats rolling like that.
Again, it's distorted at the top end, but cleaned up a bit I'd definitely play this out for its electro vibe and faithful dark sounds. Played it twice. This is my favourite.

8/10

hiccup/saturdayagain

This sounds more like the electroclash style of Ladytron, Fischerspooner, which I really like. Liked the samples, although I'm beginning to think it might be my headphones because this one sounds a little distorted to me too... the piano is a bit disturbing for some reason, in kind of a good way, nice work all in all!

7/10

jodal/blind as captain cat

Oooh, this is tasty, I'm keen on the vocal processing, and the break is nice, a good dubby flow there... is that a Mellotron pad running through it?
Reminds me of J Saul Kane/Depth Charge, nice one!

8/10

mwgdwrg_Yr-Oerfel-Fawr

Is it me or is this one distorted too??
The bass seems really heavy, but fuck it's good anyway...
This one really has the feelgood factor, the arpeggiation is superb, and with a few key changes and a longer construction with breakdowns, this would be a beautiful tune.

6/10

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This was really hard to choose between, as is always the case.

I'm thinking the distortion must really be there - because jodal's track was fine, as were the first three I heard, watch those recording levels guys/gals!
Maybe it all gets a bit crunched in the mp3 conversion process... having just played back my track the low end is a little bit crushed too and it wasn't when I was mastering it!

The overall standard is definitely getting better - we must have enough tracks for a really good diverse Urbanites compilation/mix CD by now.

Top work peeps!

The playlist format on Hiccup's zip file is no good for me either.
...

 It's just a zip file full of standard mp3 files. They should play in any media player. I just downloaded it/them to check, and they work fine in Winamp.

DOH!

Sussed it - didn't work at first but I'm doing other shit with my zip extractor.

Hiccup - you da man!

I'll edit my review...

pk, I've put my song on the website now, you should have no probs. There's a glitch in the zipped version of my song so you may want to try this link instead.

1- Funky Ken
2- JE:5
3- Wintermute

some feedback:

PK -august rain : really like the drums, although they could do with being a little louder, nice piano too- I like the fact its not overused- just comes in now and then to add some melody. 7/10

Wintermute - blade: wicked tune, nice chord sequence and I really like that vocal sample. the drums sound slightly overdriven though. Not sure about the off beat synth bit at the end, maybe could be a bit more subtle, on the whole though its really nice. 8/10

Hiccup- saturday again: quite moody and off key, in a good way though. like the reversed snare beat. tight production too- nice and clean. 7/10

JE:5 - lix tetrax: really like this, dark and harsh, top ends seem a bit too harsh though maybe, and the bottom ends a bit muddy. Really like the rythms played with the rolling high hats. Pretty fat on the whole 8.5/10

jodal - blind as captain cat: another quite off key tune- odd sample but cool though. Production is good- all the levels sound pretty spot on. Drums are well programmed- keeps the interest throughout. Doesn't really go anywhere but its not the sort of tune that really needs to. 7/10

mwgdwr- Yr-Oefel-Faw: ambient but still upbeat and happy. Like the synths-nice and warm. Short but pleasant. 6.5/10

miniGMgiot- twinkle: nice drums, like the key changes, good use of space with the sythns, just kind of rolls along pleasantly. Very twinkly as the name sugests. 7/10

Funky Ken- telectro: funky but quite hard at the same time. Nice tight production. Really like the way it progresses. Don't have much to comment on this, but I really like it. 9/10

Is that it? Are all the votes in? Shall I add them up, or does anyone else want to volunteer? (I'm crap with numbers).

Sounds good to me... I better not get involved in the count scoring as always seem to fuck it up !

OK, I got the following scores, which also seems to tally with Wintermute's nifty spreadsheet:

1) Wintermute - 22
2) JE:5 - 17
3) Funky_ken - 15

Congratulations Mr Wintermute! Your prize is to....sort out the next music comp thread ;)

The other results were:

Jodal & miniGMgoit - 7
pk - 6
mwgdwrg - 3
hiccup - 1
boing! - 0

Congrats Wintermute!

I am well happy with joint 4th as there were some excellent tunes in the competition this month.

Can't wait for the next one, I've already got something, although not sure it will fit in with the theme that Wintermute is gonna choose.

Shouldn't the voting be a poll??

As much as I loves the XL spreads, should it be limited to us 13 music makers to vote?

Not that I really mind I guess... but y'know... nobody other than us musos listens to our hard work!

Its always tough getting people to listen to your music. This place is no exception. I say we just keep going. I really enjoy doing this, and its good to get feedback. Maybe seeing its just us doing it we could all put a bit more in when it comes to voting. Try and be constructive and actully help each other out a bit more when it comes to the production and stuff. (Laughs @ Production and stuff).

how do you know what the theme will be?

I already have a tune for next months competition and unless the theme is postrocktronica then I doubt my tunes going to fit it, but i don't really care. :p

Fuckinell  Chuffed :D Nice one, praise from you lot is praise indeed

Errr... right then... next comp... TBH I don't really care for a 'theme' one, I don't think it'd make it any easier to write a tune or to decide on a favourite, and I like hearing everyone's own style and direction. If I did it'd be "220BPM+", or "must contain at least one reference to mating ferrets".

pk - I'm a bit confused.. there were people who voted who hadn't entered a tune. We could make it a poll but then you'd have to either choose just one, or nominate a whole bunch without being able to award individual places. Plus, you can only have...10? poll entries. It'd be nice to get more voters though, we just need to keep shouting I reckon. Maybe the time is right to release a "Best Of" compilation CD ;)

Oh - and what do we reckon about length? Seeing as we're mid-way through September, would an "Autumn" competition be in order? We could close entries on the first reported instance of carol singing in Brixton, or something.

I'm happy with not having a theme. Don't think many people stuck to the last one (me included).

With regards to the business of voting I think its probably best to stick with the top three style. I used to think a poll would be better but I think it would lead to a lot less feedback and blind voting which none of us want surely.

I don't see why we couldn't start a new competition now and then just set the deadline for mid-October. That would give everyone a month to create something new and we wouldn't have to wait around for ages untill the next comp was up and running. IMO this is the best thing on Urban we just need to convince everyone else. (I did try with this: Link ) :D

Oh... there were? DOH! Didn't read the thread properly again...

DOH! (Part 2)

That is of course absolutely right - though a multi-vote option would still give a similar top 3 result wouldn't it?

It'd be nice to get more voters though, we just need to keep shouting I reckon. Maybe the time is right to release a "Best Of" compilation CD ;)

Agreed, and it could support the radio venture too.
Does anyone have all the entries?
I have most, but not the streams.
I'm happy to edit them together and master them (basically just EQ everything to conform, bit of compression where desperately needed I guess) sometime in October.

Never been into themes, optional is fun, but I usually sling up whatever I've been musing on.

Anything less than 5 minutes is OK... isn't it?

I'm loving Hiccup's Zip file of all entries, makes the whole thing way easier to sort out.

ooh 2nd place! I didn't expect that at all. It's very handy getting criticism, good or bad, i'm just really bad at articulating my feelings about music through writing so i'll try my best in the future to write up what I think about each track.

Congratulations Wintermute and Funky_Ken! I'm looking forward to the next one. Keep up the good work everyone.
