The sublime vocalists you have heard..

^ deffo Sinead - can't listen to her hardly at all these days cos I overdid her so much in the past, but still...anyone who listens to the live version of Troy and doesn't get goosebumps is dead, frankly.

@ Annierak - *scribbles down yet another name for the list* ;)

Posting about Julie Christmas on the other thread has reminded me that she is a sublime vocalist - an extraordinary controlled/cathartic scream.

Ta Soj :)

John Shuttleworth. Anyone who isn't moved by the lyrics of "Pigeons in flight" has no soul :D

Monica Queen. She sang on Belle and Sebastian's "Lazy line painter Jane". Very powerful vocals. Must check out more of her stuff

There's a guy call Jimmy Scott. Pretty old now, he's a jazz singer. He has Kallmann's syndrome which means his voice never broke. He has this amazing soprano voice. Saw him at Ronnie Scotts a few years ago. Sublime indeed!

Is he the guy who made a record with Lou Reed a while back? I saw him too - used to go under the name Little Jimmy Scott.

His voice was great though odd that it came of this little old man.

Robert Wyatt
Brian Wilson
Stuart Staples
Laetitia "Seaya" Sadier (Stereolab)
Darlene Love
Carole King
Ronnie Spector

Some good ones already listed on this thread but no sign of Cassandra Wilson - listening to her is just like being wrapped up in a dark blanket full of honey!

marc almond was bang on the money at the roundhouse last night, really enjoying himself, voice sounded terrific (which was good as the music mix wasn't all that unfortunately), he did low-rent hi-energy slow torch fast pop the whole damned lot before leading the audience through a mass acapella sing-along to say hello wave goodbye that made my eyes go slightly moist, it was wonderful.

Levi Stubbs
Ken Boothe
Dennis Brown
Slim Smith
John Holt
Pat Kelly
Dusty Springfield
Sinead O'Connor
Loleatta Holloway
Brenda Holloway
Aretha Franklin

To name but a few....
