I think this needs its own thread...theres been bits of chat here and there in 2013, but it would be nice to collate stuff on this nu sound in one place.

Haven't heard a catchy name for it hence neo-proto-jungle-speed garage [NPJSG]! :D I say speed garage as quiet a few tunes have the UKG swing + breakbeat + hoover bass elements

To kick off heres some chat from the mixes thread, and a great mix which captures whats going on so far:

quote="porno thieving gypsy" An excellent proto jungle mix - think Special Request & Tessela type tunage. Much better than I'm making it sound! /quote

(Nice to see some OJ names on there, Doc Scott, Wax Doctor, DJ Die, and fair play to Mark Pritchard who never got tied down in one style.)

Enjoying this mix ska (and porno)

Been really loving this sound since hearing both Brackles and Dust & Blackdown on Rinse playing tunes by the likes of Etch, Special Request and Tessela.

In the summer hearing some of those gave me the same vibes again as when hardcore, jungle, and garage were in their element, but still keeping things upfront and fresh in a bass/funky/dubstep production (as opposed to just a modern remake/'retro' sounding tune). IYSWIM?! :hmm:

I've lost the plot with 170-180bpm d'n'b for quite a few years now. Whilst its good that sounds/genres don't standstill and evolve, at the same time I struggle to recognise a lot of d'n'b I hear in terms of its roots. This sort of stuff for me is the more natural development/upfront take on hardcore/jungle/garage heritage.

Good stuff apart from the garagey "let's shuffle around our handbags while supping Bicardi Breezers" meh.

    The rest I enjoyed, lots.

Summer 1993... hearing 31 Seconds for the first time on a glorious sunny day, walking through Hackney Downs, locked into Kool 94.5 FM on my personal stereo.

Summer 2013... hearing Hackney Parrot for the first time on a beautiful sunny day, walking on the common land near where I live atm in Yorkshire, locked into Rinse net streaming on my mobile phone.

Dunno why but just wanted to share that anecdote really, there's something poetic about it all!

@ska invita - found this earlier which I'm enjoying, and didn't realise that Special Request (aka Paul Woolford) had an album out in October of this kinda influenced stuff - going to check it out in the New Year.

This Jungle-Juke (and beyond) mix feels like it fits on this thread...

“Paris-based Moresounds music is that rare thing: a real synthesis of dub and dance music aesthetics, pulling from the enduring, mutating DNA strands of each to create something that’s beyond a mere mixture of styles.”
