The Sopranos: The Deluxe Boxset

I liked Breaking Bad, but it’s over rated. It’s the performances that lifts it above its milieu. It could also have been two seasons shorter and retained more credibility. It all goes a bit (more) A-team towards the end. It’s fun rather than top class TV like the Sopranos or Mad Men at its best.

Ah, Mad Men! Am actually watching that right now. (2nd time).

The first three series of Sopranos absolutely lives up to its reputation. It's the classic period of the show. When I think about how great it was, those are the series I'm thinking of.

There was a noticable drop in quality in series 4 - it felt like the writers had this massive show and an amazing cast of characters but didn't really know what to do or where to go with them. Still good.

Series 5 was a step up again, in part because of Steve Buscemi. It was just more Sopranos doing what Sopranos does so well.

iirc, series 6 was split in two by the writers strike. The first half was yet more Sopranos, which if you were still watching after all that time gave more of the same. The second half of the series was a bit of a mess, with stuff just happening each episode while in the background the overarching storyline led towards that ending. And what a brilliantly memorable ending it was - people can still argue over what happened.

Wire was great for 4 series. I think of series 1 and 3 as the classic story; series 2 and 4 focused on different things and were both amazing. The central plot of series 5 was a mis-step and the focus on the press felt forced in a way the dockers and education system hadn't, but it was a fun ride watching all those great characters doing what they do.

Breaking Bad was finding its feet in the first series, but got better and better up to the explosive ending of series 4. Series 5 was a bit 'what happened next' leading to a tidy conclusion.

All three shows were fantastic in their own way.

Sopranos is great, but preferred Mad Men. Breaking Bad is brilliant too, watched it again earlier this year and it was even better the second time round.

A word of warning with the sky boxsets, be wary of the expiry date. We did the same last year and around Christmas time it vanished and didn't come back for several months. I guess they negotiate with HBO every so often to have it available.

I couldn't get past the sexism in Mad Men. I understand that it is portraying a certain time, but it seemed to revel in it, and enjoy the leeway it was given if you see what I mean?

Breaking Bad left me cold too.

The Sopranos is one of the best series ever written for tv. Ever. I've watched it 3 times now and I could easily watch it all again.

sojourner I thought that the least subtle and uninteresting portrayal of sexism in Mad Men is in the pilot, it improves hugely after that. If you were ever really stuck and wanted to try it again, I'm not going to be the total cliché of "give it a few episodes" :D:facepalm:

The women are the most empowered characters in the series as it goes on, I don't think it revels in sexism, but rather reflects the time in which it's set.
I’d agree. The strongest stories are about how people dealt with social prejudices of the times, both well and badly. I think the sexist (and other -ist) characters come off very badly. Not financially, because that wouldn’t be realistic. But their ridiculousness does shine through.

I don’t want to do any spoilers, but I can think of loads of incidents where male main characters look like dicks.

I loved Mad Men. But I can understand why it might be an uncomfortable watch at times.

I actually find the way misogyny is handle in the Sopranos more problematic.

Season 6 is a complete waste of time. As it became more popular the actors had the writers over a barrel and started demanding leading roles in particular episodes.
