Bollocks, Garf. The bike was locked. This was a bike thief out and about with tools looking for bikes to nick.

And also, yes, you most certainly can blame someone for an opportunistic theft. If you see a bike unlocked outside a shop and take it, you have stolen it and can be blamed accordingly.

however no on would seemingly have a great deal of sympathy for you settign yourself up for it... either...

I've never had a bike stolen. Back when I was a cyclist I was very poor and only ever rode pieces of shit, most of which could be left unlocked and not be nicked! However I've never ridden a bike worth more than a ton. How much more worth it are they?

Well, my current bike is worth £750, which I wouldn't have paid if it was all my own money (cycle to work scheme, see). That's more than twice as much as my last bike, and it's not twice as nice. But it is definitely more fun to ride. I accelerate faster, the brakes are better, it's less heavy to hump up stairs. The components are higher quality. I know it'll last longer. It makes me want to ride it.

It's like any hobby or enthusiasm. If you take the odd photo here and there, then a £150 digital will do you just fine. But if you take photos for an hour or two every day, and it's a major part of your life, then spending money on a good camera pays itself back in enjoying it so much more. Musical instruments, fast cars, handbags, I suppose.

there is a lesson here ..

the Onguard Rottweiler (despite its tough) name is a pretty flimsy cable lock ...£9 from CRC, and really would pose no problem to a bike thief with some big cutters under his kilt.

my home made fixie (which owes me less than £130) is such a part of me i'd be more upset to have this bike nicked than my much more expensive off the peg Giant Trance so guess what.... i dont let it out of my sight but if i have to frame and both wheels are inside a Kryptolock D-lock.
Its a pain to carry about but no ones going to steal my bike unless they have a disc cutter
