The Smiths

The eponymous self-titled albulm is the best. Followed by The Queen is Dead.

Never sure what to make of the first album. It's good, but it's not something I listen to a lot.

Reel Around the Fountain is a great song, though - such wonderfully pervy lyrics. :D

There's four Smiths albums you need.

The Smiths
Meat is Murder
The Queen is Dead
Strangeways here we come

This will take you their work, each has some difference from the one previous. Strangeways is not always rated highly but I like it, it' a bit different from the others. There always appears to be a toss up between meat is murder and queen is dead for their best.

Louder than Bombs has a lot of pieces not on the above albums so is worth buying too.

S/He is 23 FFS! Not too young to know The Smiths by any means.

he :)

i said this at the start of the thread; i knew about them but ive never listened to them, except the song 'heaven knows im miserable now' which i liked a lot.

i just wanted to know what album would be a good starting point.

as it happens im in a public library where you can borrow cd's (50p for 3 weeks!). the only one they have tho is 'the very best of the smiths', the other albums were unavailable. ive taken this out anyway even though i would rather have got one of the albums.

im looking forward to getting home and listening to it :)

The generation gap emerges so quickly these days. :D I was in a club a few years ago with a mate, commenting on how all the nu-metal they were playing meant nothing to us and everything to people only a few years younger, whereas when the Stone Roses came on it emptied the dancefloor - just as we went onto it!

Being 21, I'm probably of the younger age group, but I would've been looking awkward with you dancing away to Fools Gold.
My music taste has always been about ten years ahead of my age thanks to my dad.

Fools Gold I've never liked for some reason. IIRC this was Made of Stone, one of the finest tunes of its era or any other. IMVHO, of course. :D

Can't agree that Meat is Murder is better than the debut album tbh. The Smiths is a seminal piece of vinyl if you ask me. The Queen is Dead is certainly within touching distance of it, but I still prefer the first one overall i think.

Jeebus! I said Fools Gold because it's the only track of theirs I've ever heard in a club.

 I wasn't having a go - just remarking that that's not a song I've ever really got into. :)

I doubt the kids I was referring to, that time in Spiders in Hull, would have known either song, tbh. :D

21 is no excuse. I expect anyone posting on the Music Forum to have been born with impeccable taste and a wide musical knowledge ;)

I'm only 21 and I already feel old when I go out. I mean I do, by large, prefer older music, but I'd be quite content with music from the 90's, or even just a few years old. But no, if it wasn't released about 5 minutes ago it doesn't get played. :S

Totally agree. 'Hatful of hollow' is worth getting as well

I wasn't either! The "Jeebus" was an expression of suprise at a club playing anything other than fools gold, nothig aimed at you. Sorry for the confusion!

Oh yes, Hatful of Hollow is great. I only had a rather scratched vinyl of it until recently so it rarely got played: now I have it on MP3 it's one of my most listened-to Smiths records.
I love it's rawness. Had to replace my vinyl copy with a cd cos i played it to death. 'Handsome devil' is so good, makes me want to put national health glasses on and wave flowers :o :D

ummmm...interesting point. I think it's a pretty good introduction really. Difficult one as I love all The Smiths albums and Hatful Of Hollow was the first one I got.

It was the first one I got as well, and I agree that it is a good introduction.
