The Smithfield Nocturn

Sigmund Fraud

893 all the way.
A night of bike racing around smithfield market - 23.6.07

details here

includes:-

#courier race

#'Le Mans style' folding bike race - competitors must dash from a standing start to their (folded) steeds, unfold them and then race!

#'All star challenge' - apprently with celebs ie hangers on and bike industry people nobody has heard of.

#the race proper with real racing cyclists.

It has the potential to be great but I also see Rapha are involved and there are corporate hospitality tickets available, so it could be a bag of wank...it'll be free though.

sadly I'll miss it as I'm in the Pyrennees that weekend.

Looks good. I don't suppose there's an event ordinary Joe's on their pennyfarthings can enter? Couldn't see anything on the site (ta for link).

Will drop by anyways. :)

Having originally posted to the unofficial thread, I thought I'd join the Sigmund Fraud authorised official Bike race thread.

I've had an email back from the organisers inviting me to send them a cheque in order to complete my registration.

I'm a bit nervous about going ahead with this... could be an opportunity for some very public humiliation as I'm not in peak condition.

Alternatively, it could be a good chance to get back in shape, and I might even finish in the top 30 with a bit of luck (40 Racers start so this doesn't seem too ambitious).

If I do ride I'll be on a Brompton and I imagine there'll be some serious riders on airnimals or Moultons who will be able to wipe the floor with anyone on a brompton.

So what is Urban's advice? Should I ride?

fantastic! Yes of course you should ride!

I think the folders race was always going to be for entertainment purposes primarly, but the most obvious advice is practice - practice unfolding again and again, practice cornering and do some short, intense rides that get your heart rate up a bit.

And good luck!

I'm not a celeb, and I doubt that most of the other commuters, couriers, yoof and cycling enthusiasts will be either.

..which is 1 out of 4 races.

Rapha are twats, but thats still not enough to rubbish a free to see bike race in the smoke and to 'Hope they get mugged for their bikes'.

Divisive Cotton where do you get off?

This is a thread about a bike race taking place at night in corner of the city which will be pretty much dead except for bike nuts.

Have you got nothing better to do than slag people off on a bulletin board for enjoying themselves in underused public space?

bump

this is on again today, there's folding bike races too apparently with a le mans style start to unfold the bike too

I couldn't hang around for long, but it seemed to be another great success this year. Looks like the Nocturne is now firmly established on the London cycling calendar. It's a great location for the circuit.

Pics over HERE.

They held one in Edinburgh the last two years and it was ace, but I don't think they're having one there this year :(
