It's a nostalgia thread for me, I was in Auckland at the time. It's been a few years since the building on the end of that wharf looked like that as well!

The interesting side story is the nature of the politics and practice of Mitterand himself, from his youthful fascism to his family links, and continuing sheltering and befriending of Vichyite and Milice types , and those who were active around the Cagoule right wing terrorist group of the 1930s, after his late wartime and post war rehabilitation. (All of which was kept well buried from the world whilst he was the "Socialist" President.) The Cagoule used to behave in just such a way as the French Secret state acted against Greenpeace.
