The cheapest quote I got was e-car and this is for £1235.

That is still quite a lot to pay for insurance, I assume it is at least fully comp.

My partner just saved some £400 by using the post offices insurance shopping service. Have you shopped around?

It is fully comp. My lil' bro works for Churchills and did a comparison job for me and it is the cheapest. I am more worried about the fact that my insurance will GO UP once I pass my test

I might just keep that little fact to myself methinks :hmm:

my mum bought a skoda ten years back. she liked it so much that when she needed a larger car this year she bought another skoda. they do the job, are nice and reliable, and let's face it, brands are for tossers.

Skodas were never as bad as their reputation suggested, although build quality and the technology content both rose after VW bought them out in the early '90s.

The old rear-engined ones from before then are said to be great fun, in a rather flimsy, slightly hair-raising sort of way.

Me, one of the cars in my fantasy garage is the short-lived Group B rally car from the mid-80s, the Skoda 130LR:

tbh modern skodas are very well made

if they lost the skods badge then I am certain they would sell shitloads of them

car snobbery is weird though

Who voted less £250? We're not in 1979.

I dread to think what you'd get for £250, a shopping trolley with an hamster-wheel powered engine.

I paid £230 for my Golf. I have had it three years, done over 6,000 miles and spent about £200 quid on it in all that time. It's a great car apart from some carb problems, but old pierburg carbs are crap whatever car they're in.

I suppose I don't realise how lucky I am with insurance. My renewal is only £130, and I got a quote on an imaginary GTi for about £240.

A friend of mine has a limo / wedding car business - couple of Rollers, a Bentley, a nice, 1964 rose-pink Cadillac Coupe Deville, a couple of vintage things that do the London - Brighton rally.

The point is, day to day he drives a Skoda Octavia. It's his second.

If you're young and crave the cred, fair enough. If you're older, fartier and give less of a shit, I'd certainly consider one.

How / why will it go up? that seems strange to me.

You are deemed more of a risk as a new driver. I think it boils down to being unsupervised.

I was kinda joking about losing the badge thing. This thread has firmed up a few things in my mind; I shall not be getting a Skoda regardless of the fact that it is made by VW and they also make Audi's. I may be thinking of spending too much on a first car and maybe something under £2000 would be better for me. I really really do want an Audi and I cannot imagine driving anything else. Everytime I see one in the street my heart skips a beat (steady on girl) :o

Another question: How many miles is too much for a second hand car? under 50K, 75K, 100K - discuss

Will edit poll later to reflect new Q's but gotta dash as school run calls.

Servicing is probably the main thing, and they say regular use is also more important than low mileage, but then some cars seem to suffer more than others. I remember Top Gear slagging off used cars with "motorway miles" on them, but I think as long as you thoroughly check the condition then mileage should be a side issue - within reason since I am thinking around 120k when I think of high mileage.

More reasons here http://bangernomics.tripod.com/highmile.htm

I'm 38 and on my 7th car , been driving for 14 years and I only ever spend £200 on a car:D if they last me a year I am happy. I did once spend 2k on a car and it lasted me the same amount of time- once getting it through the MOT cost more then you paid for the car then it is time for it to be scrapped or sold to a mechanic.

My last car cost £200 and I weighed it in and got £110, my new car cost £200 and its wicked- turbo diesel, sunroof, speakers, 130,000 on the clock, but thats fine. When I sit behind brand new BMW 4W drives and think how much they cost I just feel ecstatic that Mine only cost £200:D:D:D

As long as it works and has music I dont care what it is.

Having been a passenger in the new Skoda's several times they seem very comfortable and nicely designed. Couldn't say owt about under the bonnet though.

I know of cars going for about £40. :hmm:

My sister's first car cost £500. Red citroen ZX. Three accidents in the first two weeks (not her fault) and cost her/me a fortune in repairs.

In the end I forced her to get rid, the damn thing was just fucking cursed.

I will never own a skoda. I can't. I used to take the piss out of them so much when i was a kid.

2nd hand alfas are a bad bad idea just for the recored though. 1st hand alfas are not considered overly reliable so 2nd hand is asking for trouble.

To all intents and purposes skodas are good cars these days though. Maybe if you take the badges off and preyt no one notices you might get away with it.

The newer Skoda's are great cars, and if you get a VRS model your gonna give an Audi A3 2.0T a good run for its money in the speed/acceleration stakes.

A few years ago TopGear done a car comparison to a number of people picked from the public, all cars were de-bagged and the favorite car chosen by nearly all was the skoda....until they told them what it was :(

The Audi A3, Seat Ibiza, VW Golf GTI and Skoda Fabia VRS are all running on the same parts, so if something does go wrong you parts availability is greater and cheaper.

I could get a T Reg Renault Scenic for that. But I'd rather have a Skoda.

Car prices are plummetting right now.

Mr weepiper has a Skoda Octavia, it's a great workhorse car, nothing major has gone wrong in the 70,000 miles he's done on it :)

My first car was/is a P-reg Peugot 306 turbo diesel with 118,000 miles on it, cost me £800, I've probably spent about the same again on it in the couple of years I've had it. It's going to have to go soon but only because it's really too small now we have 3 kids. Still goes fine.

I am too scared to consider anything with more than 75K on it. I have seen some lovely looking Audi's in gumtree but the mileage puts me off :hmm:

If it's a petrol car that might be wise.... a diesel engine will go twice round the clock no bother though.

When I was younger, 11 or so, my mom bought me nicks trainers because she couldn't afford nike. I feel it is important you know this before reading further and commenting. Advice and derision duly expected in equal measures

I am in the market for a new car. A new second-hand car that is. It would be my first car - test in a couple of weeks - and I have my eye on an Audi A3 1.6, I can just about afford a 1999 but would idealy love a 2001. Anyhoo, I have been topping up the saving pot and obsessively checking ebay and gumtree every day, as you do.

Here lies the problem, it has come to my attention that for the same price as I am willing to spend, I could get a newer SKODA with a lot less mileage.

But the thought of driving a SKODA makes me think back to those days of being made to wear my nicks for PE and having all the kids taking the piss out of me :o

Are Skoda's as bad as Nicks were

I feel your pain. I didn't even have Nicks, I had Hi-Techs.

Skodas are much less a thing to be ashamed of these days. Car of choice for the Police Service of Northern Ireland. I have a Skoda, just can't drive it yet. Lots of peeps like them now, my uncle has one and all.

my sister bought a fairly old polo for a couple of hundred quid. if it gets damaged she'll recoup most of the money in scrap value. my uncle bought my cousin a nearly new golf. some idiot drove into it and didn't stop. £1000 damage. if it goes through her insurance, god knows what she'll be paying next year.

buy something cheap, but reliable

Nothing wrong with the more modern Skoda's.....

A while back,I got a Felicia diesel estate from the auctions,with 175000 miles on it !! Drove perfectly well,no rust etc.....£235. ;)

One of the taxi companies round my way uses a lot of Octavia's.....nice comfortable cars, too !
Aaand....they make one model of Octavia that has the Audi TT turbo engine in it.....proper fast car.....
