The Self Indulgent Bob Dylan Appreciation Thread

No, he really doesn't

He does. He really does

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin',
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin',
Heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin',
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin',
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And it's a hard, and it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard,
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

the one track town/it's brown/and a breeze too/
pack up real neat, sweet, we're heading out/ to witchita and a pile of fruit/
get the loot/don't be slow/we're gonna catch a trout.

That was great. I love the Bob on this tour. He's really enjoying himself.

Apparently not, actually. I read something about it years ago - in a Q special on Dylan, IIRC. On the night most of Hard Rain was recorded it was pissing with rain, the band kept getting electric shocks from their equipment, and everyone was pissed off. Dylan's marriage to Sara Lownds was collapsing and he'd been drinking very heavily and shagging one of his backing singers for days beforehand. Not long before the gig Sara had shown up and demanded to know what he was playing at. According to some, she was by the stage, only to hear Dylan turn 'Lay Lady Lay' - a love song he'd written for her - into a song about drunken one night stands. I see Hard Rain more in the same light as Blood on the Tracks: really not a happy record, which is perhaps why it's a brilliant one.

Interesting. I didn't know that thanks. It certainly is brilliant and there is no denying the raw passion and energy on that tour. I think they show Dylan at his creative best

Like a rolling stone. From the same tour.

Don't then!

Go and post on a thread where you feel you have something to say other than "He's shite."

Not difficult is it?

I didn't post 'he's shite' to begin with, I disputed the post about him using 'language and music in a super-sophisticated way', because it's clearly bollocks.

annnnnd I'll post wherever the fuck I like, ta :)

is it? How so? The allusions and imagery of his earlier work (up to the mid seventies)are sophisticated and multi-layered. His use of meter is unusual and inventive. Sounds pretty 'sophisticated' to me.

Is there any musician you'd say did use language in such a way? And/or how would you typify Dylans linguistics?

I see, so you can't support your argument, if you even really agree with it. It was just another 'I hate Bob Dylan' thing. Fair enough, tho why some people feel a positive need to restate their dislike over and over is a bit beyond me.

(looks for bewildered smilie)

I understand it all too well, normally a cover for 'I dont really know' :) :p

(it does add another level of 'whats the point?' tho. 'I came here to say X is shit, but cant be arsed to explain why')

Is it?

That's nice dear :)

I think you probably know me well enough by now to know that I may well have more than an inkling of knowledge, but that I really just cannot be arsed

Still, fun to wind up the Dylan obsessives, passes the time, you know ;)

well, if you just wanna have a bit of fun with it, do it better! Point out how Dylan was nothing but a Donovan rip-off, how Sara wrote half his lyrics, something actually annoying that could get a proper reaction!

tssk tssk, you're no Phil Dwyer I'm afraid :(
