The Saw movies Y/N?

I remember that the first one wasn't even made out to be a "horror film" at all - it was described as a psychological thriller with a serial killer, like Se7en, with a moral dilemma in it with the two main characters.

After that it seems to have started getting all a bit "how many Dungeons And Dragons traps can we get into this". Quite telling that the bit that was supposed to be the worst was an autopsy - you know, a standard medical procedure.

I've only seen the first two, but they're really not - Torture Porn was just a convenient brush picked up by the press.

I was very surprised how good Saw was - a clever and very intense thriller. Saw 2 was predictably a lot less good - a lot less clever for starters - but still worth a watch. Presume they've gone downhill since then but I'd give them a shot.

Verdict: Y

They were dull with unnecessary and overwhelming violence.

Only seen the 1st 2...1st one was alright, didn't really rate the 2nd, so haven't bothered with the rest. 6 is getting into Freddie Kreuger territory innit...

I like the first one and the second one is alright, I can't even seperate the 3rd 4th and 5th one though because they're all equally shit and over-elaborate and there are too many tests. OH FOR GOD SAKE JIGSAW, stop 'TESTING' me. He's obsessed with tests. This is your first test, this is your penultimate test, this is your final test..aaaaaah only joking THIS is your final test.

I'll still watch this one though. I do like torture porn.

Edit: GS(v) posting as Cloo cos his brain's not woke up yet!

The violence was certainly overwhelming - as intended - but unnecessary? Since the theme of violence is central to the plot, yet it mostly remains off-screen, how do you come to that conclusion?

Fair play to the BBFC for passing all this shit though.

While it's something I wouldn't wish to watch (I just saw the squeal to The Punisher last night on Sky and the amount of gross violence meant I switched it over), but they do say that as long as it's legal they have have no right to deny adults to choose their own entertainment.

Compared to a few years ago where something would be banned at the drop of hat, things have moved on. This is good.

Lumping Saw together with Hostel is sacrilege. That's why Hostel II bombed and Saw is going strong. I love the franchise, I cannot wait 'til Friday!

Anyone sitting on the fence should tackle the box set. Then you might get converted. You can't just dip in and out of them like Final Destination or Friday the 13th movies.

I know the studio's milking it and they'll probably start testing my patience at some point but that time hasn't come yet. I think there are plans as far as Saw 9 but look at fucking Lost, how many hours is that stupid show gonna run to when they've done seven series' or whatever it is.

it's the worst kind of simpleton entertainment - vacuous nonsense with a veneer of some sort of moral content. If you're a halfwit.

First one's OK. The rest are shit (only seen 2 & 3). They become increasingly predictable and implausible.

i like 1 and to a lesser extent 2. the rest were ok but too much focus on the gore over anything else. will probably watch the new one when is on dvd but not bothered enough to go see it at a cinema

zackly 'oo these moral conundrums are so tricksy'

just fuck off, no really, fuck off. Proper GCSE philo bullshit. Wank.

My comments are limited to Saw 1 and 2, but I recall there being very little in the way of moral conundrums. (conundra?) "Can you gouge out your eye with this scalpel in under a minute in order to live?" is a visceral not a moral question.

The first one was pretty good, mostly because gratiuitous on-screen violence wasn't the only point of the movie. Then you get to Saw 2 and you've got all these people locked up together in a scary house and it's back to bog standard horror fare, you know each one is gonna get picked off in turn in a variety of unpleasant ways and that's exactly what happens. After watching a girl get thrown into a pit full of syringes I decided I had seen as much of this series as I ever wanted to. How they've managed to dredge up a sixth film I've no idea.

I'll watch any old shite if it's got spaceships or aliens in it, but Saw films are without any redeeming features and are actually an insult to my intelligence:p

I don't think I've ever seen a whole one through, but they look OK from what I've caught. Maybe I should download the first one and have a butchers.

And what's all this "Torture Porn" stuff? There's not nearly enough fucking for it to be classed as porn!

I think the term "torture porn" refers to a type of horror film that features unnecessarily grim and gratuitous violence, seeming to relish in close ups of people suffering relentlessly.

I know what it means, but it's a lazy and shit term :)
