The Sampling Debate

Well, I've recently downloaded some sampling software so when I feel inclined to do so, I will give it a whirl and have a play... I've always fancied being a musician ;)

Yeah Chris Cunningham is great. Being a music video director has to be one of the greatest jobs in the world i reckon.

The software/hardware he uses for video effects is called flame. I went into the only place in the UK to enquire about it once and the secretary burst out laughing lol. :D

Then someone came out to inform me that you don't get much change from £250,000 if I wanted to get my mits on it. :o  :D

lol, that's what record companies are there for. :D

I can't believe this debate is even happening in this day and age.

When electric guitars first came out idiots said "this isn't music".

Later on when synths came along the idiots said "this isn't music".

Then the idiots said the same about sampling.

(((music)))

Exactly, I'm not quite sure what people are arguing about here. Is this about sequencer/studio mix vs people 'playing' music ? both are valid just different. As for the sampling debate it's so last century and increasingly meaningless as the stock in recorded music slides to zero.

I started writing a song on my guitar the other day using the chords Am, C, Em and G, but apparently they've aleady been used before. :(

Some people don't think using samplers is 'making' music

I do see the point, if I just make a tune out of 4 bar loops I take from bits of other people's tunes then it isn't the same as actually making it

But I cut stuff up into seconds and milliseconds. and tweak and use effects on the sounds. So I think that what comes out at the end is entirely original, even if I don't physically make any of the sounds myself during the process

Wht say you?

The art is taking someone elses music and turning it into something new.

All musicians rip music off and have done throughout history

so what difference does it make whether your ripping someone off with a sampler or a guitar?

If it's not done with a proper instrument it's not music. It's all the computer isn't it? Also, playing other people's records is not being an artist.

so when the jam wrote what you give is what you get''
completely ripping off tax man by the beatles, but not crediting G Harrison at all

is that still music?
that was done with proper instruments

heh. there are far more idiots in the world with electric guitars than there are with samplers.

in reference the the OP, i couldn't give a fuck. as long as the music you make is good.
