OK compost keepers here's your chance to bag a bit of urban kudos and a shiny trophy which i will provide.

This is Urban's very own tallest sunflower competition.

It's quite simple. Your challenge is to grow the tallest sunflower by natural process.

There will be two classes for entry.

Nippers (Prize for tallest to be confirmed)
Adult (Prize for tallest said shiny trophy to be contested for annually)

It'll be great if we can get the kids involved hence the nippers class. Mine go nuts for sunflower planting every year. Last year we grew a sunflower den:cool:

I'll get some loose rules, guidelines, soil recipes, growth hormones, seed supply lists, etc posted tomorrow. Any thoughts on these do post away;)

Get your names down here and await the start date:D

I'm in!

And do the nippers get to do one each or is it per family?

Might have more chance if we grow 4 :D

Sounds like a brilliant idea! I haven't got a garden so I'll get vicarious sunflower joy from this thread  <<< sunflower smiley

How could it be done otherwise ?
The mind boggles ...

I would like to join in but it doesn't fit in with my planting scheme ....
Hey you'd be surprised what those hydroponic weed growers would do to get a head start.:D

You could plant one in a bucket GG;)

I'm in :D as will bees too when he gets home :D the only thing he can grow is sunflowers :D

I have my seed already and I assume we're not allowed to use sneaky grow faster chemicals?

I'm in and the little Vipper is in.

So when's the start date then, anybody know:confused:
When i get back from Austria:D
I'm not having you lot start before me:mad:

Actually I'm waiting for my seeds to arrive but i think we should just leave it open that way anyone who wants to join later wont feel put off that they missed an official start. I'd say go for it whenever you think it's the best time to start.

We usually do ours during the Easter holidays after the egg hunt has finished. But then we start ours in a greenhouse. Maybe we should say Easter Sunday but it really doesn't matter.

Now the rules.

  • Photographic evidence of any plants put forward for consideration must be displayed on this thread.
  • Plants should be measured from where they leave the ground to where they meet the flower head (The stalk) plus the measurement of the radius of the seed head (The petaless flower).
  • The judges decision will be final. (Would love one of the mods to do this if poss. Would Mrs M? )
  • You can use whatever soil, fertiliser or growing method you choose providing it does not involve using anything that is listed under the I.A.A. list of banned substances
  • No-one is allowed to tamper with anyone else's plants, seeds or growing medium
  • You must only enter plants that you have started from seed yourself.
  • A finish date will be agreed in the thread. (Prob the end of the school holidays)

Ladies, gentlemen, nippers start to turn your compost:cool:

If someone could send me 2 or 3 seeds I'll give it a go, but like penni we is a bit exposed for successful tall plants.
We do get quite a bit of sun though :)

As long as I don't have to personally take a tape measure to each entry, I'm up for this :)

Ooh, nice move! :D

Shall we post pictures of our seedlings as well? You can all see the slugs in my pots if you are really lucky

Actually, on the tele this morning there was a bit about a little snail ornament that you pour beer into and then the slugs climb into it. It was only about £5.99 but looked like a good idea - if only I could remember where they said it came from......................
