The PS3

Apart from the manual aiming, which is a bit slack, imo.

Mind you, it could just be that I'm crap at it...

sony will never do anything as good as the xbox live, its more than playing games online - they do have an actually community going. born out of experience from msn and being involved in the back end and front end of online communities. something sony have no experience of.

one of the best things i ever bought was my xbox live account :o

Thing is with the consoles now having hard drives like PCs they really could have this. Imagine, PC gamers, Xbox gamers and PS3 gamers all united in mass acts of criminality online!:D :D :D

Cant really agree with you there, I find the "community" only wants to play FPS games are tend to be whiny, racist american teenagers.

I end up playing almost exclusively with RL m8s, or ppl i know from forums, and you dont need a paid service like xbox live for that.

PS3 online service is free, which could make a huge difference, but at the end of the day it all boils down to the number of ppl using the service, which ultimately will depend on the installed userbase of both consoles.

I expect that enough people will buy the console anyway that they'll have sufficient time to get it right, even if they do have some teething issues.

There's not really any excuse for them not to...

Eh?

Blizzard had no experience of MMORPG's

I read the online capabilities of the PS3 are not so hot, but firmware patches and upgrades will solve that. The launch games look ok but there won't be anything decent for about a year. Resistance fall of man looks good until Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid 4.

I have worked out I will need a proper meaty AV stand to put all my stuff on.. £200 and a half decent HD TV £500 followed up with a PS3 £500 (with controllers and games and an HDMI cable). So its going to be a LONG while before I could afford any of that but I bet there will be plenty of people who will splurge on that in March. Its going to be the kind of thing people who are serious about their home cinema set ups will have. Its not going to be like the ubiquitous ps1 or ps2.

The main reason I'll get one is to play my old ps2 games and as a Blu Ray player. I actually think the worst thing about the PS3 is that it does NOT upscale DVDs!!! Bonkers...

I noticed that dabs are now taking pre-orders so get in there quick for that 450 quid console.

When I saw it listed for sale against other hardware, the full magnitude of the cost of it sunk it. Fucking hell, that's one EXPENSIVE console. I can buy a Core2Duo laptop for less than that console and that comes with a screen, 80Gb hard disk and 512Mb ram.

Its actually got some nice features and might be an interesting console, but until they can get that price down and some really decent games.

About 5 months after buying my PS2, the price dropped from £300 to £200. I wasn't too bothered at first because I'd had a good time with it - until I realised that it was mostly with classic PS1 games - the PS2 games at that time were pretty mediocre.

Now looking at the price of the PS3 in Japan and the USA, they could easily knock another £100 off the UK price to make it a little more competitive with the other consoles. I'll definitely wait for at least a couple of years to see how it all pans out.

Not bothered.. as people have said, same games, just a bit prettier. If I wanted pretty, I'd just play on my PC. Best launch title is FEAR. already played that on PC.

I've just bought myself a Gamecube for £30 with Zelda.. bargain, and you can bet the games are better.

Was gonna buy a Wii but I got conned in a very amateur fashion

Sony should have bought out the people who were making STALKER and made that PS3 only. I just ordered it, out on the same day. It would have given them a 1/2 decent launch title and perhaps a franchise to build on.

I can also bet that in 10 years time people will be telling me that PS3 games are better than the new PS4 games... :D

Well I was lucky enough to win one a couple of weeks ago at work :D but I understand the issue with a) the price and b) the limited launch titles.

To be fair though everything's more expensive in the UK, it isn't just the PS3 or other Sony products.

The main problem is you really need a full def TV (1080) to get the full benefit from Blu-ray. If you do, it is a massive step up from DVD, and looks incredible. Admittedly they have had issue with the first batch of Blu-ray discs looking grainy but they seem to have resolved this now.

Also for the audio boffins, Blu-ray isn't just improved visuals but also uncompressed audio.

Given that your getting the best Blu-ray player on the market by far, plus a games console and media centre, £425 isn't such a bad price, but it's the extra cost the UK has to pay which really fucks people off.

So 1080 TV, decent speakers, and a PS3 to enjoy it properly? What does that add up to in £££? Fuck that. Hard. Wih a cactus.

If I bring some back from Japan do you think people will buy them for inflated prices?

I missed a trick with the PSPs, they were about £100 in Japan but when I got home they were going for £350. I should have filled my suitcase with the little fuckers.

What are the games like?

Resistance, Motorstorm and Virtua Fighter 5 are three good PS3 exclusives (though VF5 is coming to the Xbox360), while there are some decent multi-platform franchises such as Fight Night 3, Virtua Tennis 3, Call of Duty 3, NBA 2K7.

Check out IGN for screens/reviews.

Exactly, this next generation of consoles (well apart from the Wii...) has effectively priced out me out of the market. I can't afford the console let alone all the added extras to bring out it's full potential (and that's assuming it actually gets some good games beyond the usual GTA etc)...
