What those three have suggested ^

I've just bought some lamb lettuce seeds, and funny looking round carrot seeds :D Already got broccoli, spinach and tatoes on the go... all in grow bags or pots... only got a concrete garden ;)

you can also do seed/bean sprouts for cheap green stuff in the winter. not just the ones you get in chinese foods, there are a lot of other things you can sprout.

Have looked into alfalfa... love that stuff, just never got round to doing it. I know it can be a bit nasty if you get it wrong (from what I can remember reading).

I would normally but there's none open by the time I get back from work unless I walk to the top of the high street which isn't easy now I'm 7 months preggars.
Could you get to one before you go to work? Markets and greengrocers are usually open scarily early in the morning  :D

When you're on maternity leave, you'll be able to visit greengrocers and markets galore.

How do you grow a constant supply of salady stuff from a window box?
There are some salads that are pretty hardy all year round... I'm growing spinach in a window box (admittedly it's on the floor, but could easily be mounted on a window/railing).

I mean once you pick it you have to grow it again.

What do you do for salad in the interim?

You stagger the planting/sowing so that another lot is already growing when you do the first harvest.

(so I'm told anyway... I'm doing this for the first time :o :D)

I know - it's going to be great having so much free time :D

For the time being I'll just have to have salads at the weekends when I have time to go to the grocers/stalls.

Get yourself to your loact fruit and veg stall KellyDJ. Much cheaper!

Can't during the week as the nearest one is too far and I don't get home in time from work :(

Before work is not an option either as I'd have to lug it on 2 trains and then back again.

If you haven't got a window sill how about rigging up a hanging basket in front of the window?

Plastic bread trays are handy to grow lettuces in too, as they don't need much soil depth :)

Trouble is i'm 2 floors up and i don't think the people under me would appreciate water etc trickling down into their windows !

and we have plastic framed windows so i'm not sure how i would go about it............probably against the HA rules too......can't go drilling and stuff willy nilly !

Just went to Morrisons to get some salad for my tea tonight.

OMG - the red peppers have gone up from 79p to 99p each and the iceberg lettuce are now £1.09 :(

I'm not going to be able to eat salad soon if it continues this way - I'm starting to feel the pinch now and it bloody well hurts.

Dont go to Morrissons then.

Pakistani supermarket red peppers = 99p a pound

I think about 4 large one weighs a pound.

My local one opens til 8pm and there are others that open til 9

Here's a little salad tip - most kebab shops will sell you a carton of salad for about £1.20. Fresher than any supermarket crap, and bloody delicious too (you can even have chilli sauce or garlic sauce if you want) :yum: .

I was thinking of suspending something infront of your window inside (if you have no sils to put stuff on) :)

How are kebab shops salad fresher than a supermarket?

Surely they all come from the same place, the same werehouses and so on?

If anything, I wouldn't buy anything salady from a kebab shop round here judging by the rancid, flacid crap they put on their kebabs.

Is there a place near work you could visit at lunchtime?

Cos supermarkets put nasties on their salad (in a packet). Whereas kebab man chops his up fresh daily. My local has a garlicky yoghurt sauce with fresh dill in it. Not too shoddy.
The flacidness may come from the lemon-juice and olive-oil they tend to marinate the cabbage in. I like it myself.
Rancidness I have yet to experience.
