well, it's exciting if you happen to support one of those teams. I, personally, couldn't give a shit who wins. By way of comparison, although Barca and Real tend to win La Liga, they certainly isn't a block of top 4 teams who always finish at the top year in year out. Villarreal for instance were title challengers, as were Sevilla last year.

I couldn't give a fuck either.

Absolutely no interest whether Woy keeps Fulhum up. And which of the biggest spenders are going to win the league.

Ive seen far more entertaining games than boring ones this season - including a couple of classics - so I think the football itself is fine, but the predictability of the final table (esp. the top 4 ) is disappointing. However, I reckon that next season there might be a more realistic fight for the 4th spot, although a lot will depend on the comings and goings over the summer. But it's hard not to predict that Stoke and the team that win the play-off will go straight back down, together with either West Brom or one of the teams who will be fighting to stay up this weekend (Fulham, Brum, Reading)

how many of the people who are going on about the promoted sides chances actually watch a lot of championship football?

I for one am counting the days untill the new season begins and can't wait to see who west ham sign and what world class footballers get baught by which club.

I love it!

but why would anyone who doesn't support any of the teams be "hyped up" about it?

Seems a little odd to me tbh.

Cause i actually find the league entertaining in general, and like the different situations that could change around on the last day. That's what i love about the sport. As much as i wish my team were up there competing for the title, i can enjoy it from a neutral perspective to.

Games themselves aren't always boring but really next season the Top 4 and bottom 3 is fairly predictable

I agree with this sentiment. On a week to week basis I can usually find something in the Premiership to interest me. Over the course of a season it's pretty dull, same old bollocks in the meeja about mind games between Fergie/Wenger/Rafa etc, usually fairly obvious who'll win it and who two of the bottom three are.

On the face of it, this season has been a refreshing change. When you look a wee bit more closely though, this season has seen the continuation of a trend that's been in full swing for a while. The widening of the gap between the top clubs (was a top three about 6-7 years back, now a firmly established 4) and the rest.

Apologists for the top clubs point to the fact that once in a blue moon a team has a shot at finishing fourth and breaking the hegemony. SO FUCKING WHAT? I want teams like Pompey, Everton, Villa, fuck even Newcastle, to think they can finish third, maybe even second, a few good seasons down the line perhaps even have a legit shot at winning the thing. I don't a team having a shot at finishing fourth, I want to see change in who the top four clubs are most seasons.

Back to that trend I referred to earlier. Anyone else noticed that the real safety mark is now about 36 points? That's really just anecdotal evidence though, here's a run down of the total points gained by the top four clubs in the last ten years

98: 283
99: 299
2000: 300
01: 287
02: 315
03: 297
04: 304
05: 316
06: 321
07: 308
08: 321 (with one week left)

the spending = survival thing is far more myth than reality. Sides have stayed up adding a couple of players to their squad, and sides have gone down throwing millions out on shit. Far more important is the quality of the existing players, luck with injuries, quality of the manager and the start they make.

We're a good case in point. We came up with a squad that appeared to be middling championship quality, having sneaked into the playoffs. We then merely added benayoun, konchesky and, halfway through, dean ashton, for a total of just over 10m. We stayed up having got to the FA Cup final with it. The next season our foolish hopes were raised beyond all expectation particularly when we signed you-know-who. Yet we very nearly went down

We've had a rare uneventful mid table season this year. Same again next year or will we be lurching between sneaking into the UFA spots or relegation?

being a west ham fan is never boring.

We weren't invited to the premiership party, but we've provided a few shocks along the way. i imagine portsmouth fans feel the same way.

went up. Signed Hermann Hreidarsson. No one else. A couple more players over the course of the season (Chris Makin and Alun Armstrong!) and finished 5th. Splurged on high profile signing in the off-season, then got relegated (despite nearly being saved by then lower league journeyman/now upper league journeyman Marcus Bent). Mixture of luck, good management and a side that was full of good players even in the championship.

The other thing is you can usually tell when sides will stay up if you watch a lot of championship football. It was obvious we would, even though everyone wrote us off. It's pretty obvious the Baggies will. Stoke won't embarass themselves, but will probably go down.

I knew Reading would stay up when they first came up. Yet most people wrote them off. I don't know enough about stoke to say. I reckon west brom will though.

dave - we aren't going to buy anybody... sorry mate.... well, at least nobody exciting....

Depends on who goes innit. Cole and zamora have rumpours floating about and if they both went we would definatly need a new striker.

I expect us to buy a decent defensive midfielder. Probabley frnech in nationality going on recent champ manager scouting there seems to be loads there at the minute.

I don't even bother reading the results anymore. Divisions 1 and 2 hold enough excitement for me, and not just because my teams been relegated to 2. Though I might pay a bit of attention to the Championship now Forest have been promoted. I'd rather watch a local game down the park or a trip to the mighty Ebbsfleet than buy into the super hype of the premiership.:)

I don't understand why people wrote Reading off though. They were whupping teams left right and centre on their way up.

because <sigh> they don't have much money, they are one of the poor clubs, and therefore they are near the bottom of the league.......

.......and there is a big difference between the standard of the Championship and the PRemiership......

Also, does it have to be different teams all the time in order for it to be entertaining? Sure its not very fair, but that doesn't make it boring. I'm personally very hyped for the last day on sunday.

Does it not bother you that not that long ago you could have at least hoped there was an outside chance of Newcastle winning the league, and now that just isn't possible?

It doesn't bother me that much tbh, i'm enjoying whats happening with our club atm, and the talks today sounded good so some good changes might start to be made which may make us able to break into the top four sometime in future(being optimistic is a wonderful thing eh? ;)). I still find the league enjoyable since i can accept the way it is.

i don't agree that it is impossible, newcastle are a big club with massive potential, with the right man in charge and a bit of time to organise them i could defo see them winning titles, city and everton have the potential too if they are run right

Not really. You're totally reliant on one of the big 4 imploding from within. Whilst there is always that chance, and little signs here and there (infighting in Liverpools boardroom, Arsenal players disappearing en-masse), you're totally reliant on one hell of a cock-up going on there before anyone else gets a sniff.

Also, remember that any of the big 4 has the power to smile nicely at any 1 of your players (gareth barry being an example) at any time, and its simply a matter of time before they're on their way.

I can remember Watford finishing runners up, Norwich finishing third twice in the space of four seasons.

I can even remember a time when Tottenham had genuine title aspirations.

Compared to that, this current top flight has fuck all.

You enjoy Reading's History???

Well there's much to be enjoyed.

My favourite bit of Reading's history is 1998/99 - Rovers 4 Reading 1 followed by Reading 0 Rovers 6 in the return.

Hope the cunts get relegated on Sunday btw

:)

tottenham nearly took fourth place a couple of years ago, didn't everton actually get it as well? i know that these are isolated occasions but if given time and continuity ans obviously look with injuries and suspension it can be done, if everton hadn't lost a couple of key players they might have taken fourth place,

players go where the money is these days so if villa are prepared to match whatever liverpool offer he will most likely stay, the same goes for most players now

i remember those days as well, but i believe that when the clubs decided that the home teams kept all the gate money instead of splitting it, was when the real divide started, i dont think the premier league being formed had much to do with that
