To paraphrase Bryan Adams, the only thing that looks "good on Katie Menua" is the Hammersmith flyover. :p

I still doubt katie Melua'll save the song. The Pogues are the sort of band its okay to here once a year.. wouldn't really want to spend much time listening to the stuff.

It would divert you from your usual task of listening to rubbish...

Who is Katie 'fuckin' Menua anyway?

.

Singer of the deepest affront to the concept of human dignity ever: or, to give it its working title, "There are 9 million bicicles in Beijing".

ignoring all the bullshit, Fairytale has been reissued to raise funds for the Justice For Kirsty McColl campaign, so i don't give a fuck if they get fucking Joan Rivers in to sing it if it makes some money

I think I will reserve judgement until I hear it. She does have a nice voice, but it's a little too 'nice' for the song - I think Cerys Matthews would have done a better job of singing "you scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot..."

I'm still trying to get over seeing her version of 'Lovecats'. It traumatized me for weeks after.

cerys would be ace. can't say i liked the catatonia stuff much, but her solo album was superb. she has one of the finest voices in the country.

The Pogues Christmas tour is now under way. Tonight's opener in Cardiff featured Cerys Matthews in the coveted Kirsty Karaoke spot.

"The christmas trees on the stage and the snow falling really set fairytale off.Cerys matthews did a wonderful job preforming with Shane, its just a shame kirsty couldnt be there.Although i dare say she was there in spirit."

According to Philip Chevron of the band, "This is the classic performance of the song and the Pogues would never dream of messing with perfection. In addition, our record company is currently negotiating with iTunes about the possibility of providing a special download version of the song which would be recorded live during our Christmas tour. As anyone who has seen the band live in recent years will know, a succession of female singers have performed Kirsty's parts on stage and we are still, at this late stage, in discussion about the performer for this tour."

"The important point here is that Downloads will count towards the chart figures, but obviously and sadly, Kirsty is unable to perform the duty of performing the song live. We are doing our best here to maintain the integrity of the record and of our collaboration with Kirsty while at the same time satisfying the commercial concerns of the record company who do feel, as much as Kirsty fans and Pogues fans do, that we were "robbed" of the No I slot in 1987 and will be working their butts off to try to remedy that this year.

Nobody is going to pretend this is an easy balance to achieve, but please believe that we are doing our best."

And look at this, the anti-lousie walsh device

We are reliably informed that purchases of more than 3 copies at one time do not count towards the chart figures. It is therefore not helpful to buy more than a couple of copies in any one transaction. Go back the day after, or to another shop!

You would reject the avant garde so lightly?
yep.

you can bung me i'd do anything for love but i won't to that if you like. :)

i only discovered yesterday that jim steinman wrote half of floodland... it all makes so much sense when you think about it though.

I think you'll find it's spelt Katie Manure...... 'cause she's fucking shit.

Cerys sang it with Shane last week at the Pogues gig I went to and did a sterling job. I think Ross should get Courtney Love to do it though.

what's an arab/jewish nose like anyway? she's originally from georgia. fuckin miles away from anything remotely Arab.

i'm going to see the Pogues on wednesday. will report back.

I saw them on Saturday night in Manchester. Somebody who I think was called Anna Filer came on for Fairytale of New York.

SM was rather pissed but I expect you all know that

(When a far better tactic would be to go an on and on ignoring answers already given that you don't like the sound of)

Sorry Pidgeon - will leave it now.

apparently Chrissie Hind was going to sing the part originally, instead of Kirsty McColl, but it was decided that the song needed more of a contrast to Shane's voice - something a bit smoother and less rock 'n' roll so they asked Kirsty to do it - a wise choice IMO

It's a shame Cerys Matthews didn't get to do it.

Now would have defintely been a *good* choice - she knows a thing or two about getting pissed and she's a great performer!

When I heard they were releasing this I assumed it would Cait O'Riordan would sing on it.

Would have been the best choice i.m.o. Saw the Pogues in the academy last year and she came on and stole the show with "Man you don't meet every day" and their version of "fairytale ..." was fantastic.
