the pay for some jobs

There are simply not enough flats to go around, comrade. Life in the UK seems to resemble Soviet Russia more with each passing year.

Cheeky git! :D

What I mean is to be single, have a social life, somewhere decent to live that doesn't mean you have to live in shared accomodation etc etc.. cost of living and wage sucks etc etc...

Not just London though. This is the position of most of my peer group.

The waiges I will shortly be getting, no way could I afford to rent my own flat. Through personal circumstances, I was able to get a housing association flat.

How anyone (single) manages to live in London on less than 25k a year (and have a reasonable personal life) astounds me... :(

After tax you'd get somewhere around £1550 a month, I think. That's quite a lot! Rent + bills + council tax + decent food in a shared place would probably be somewhere around £650 - £800 a month, which leaves you ~£800 a month to spend on yourself. As mentioned before, life would only become difficult if you wanted to live alone (or have a big coke habit :D ) - but not sharing really is a luxury. A whole flat to yourself?

Is it?

It's fine living out of one room in a shared house when you're 25, but what about when you're 50? And what if you're on less than 25K/year?

I find the idea that wanting your own space is a luxury, a bit odd. I lived in shared places for 12 years, and now, in my thirties, have finally got a dinky little rented flat. I'd hardly describe it as a luxury! My folks had been homeowners for 10 years by the time they were age (back when you could buy a place without wining the lottery first...)

I didn't think that once but I do now! You get used to whatever you earn don't you. I earn quite a bit more than that but I'm still skint all the time. I pay off a lot of debts (more than when I was earning less) and I go out way more than I did when I earnt less - that's become normal to me and anything less would be percieved as a terrible deprivation, but if I were to take a step back, I would realise that 'going out' is a luxury and so is buying nice food and clothes, going on holiday etc etc and that life without those things isn't so bad really.
