The lyrics when Ozzy were in the band were written by Geezer Butler.

What, all of them  Well i never knew that.

and to join in the little derail, i also saw Gillan live and he was tops too....as was Mr Halford

Maybe we need a definitive Heavy Metal Vocalist Poll, Dubs? Go on, you know you want too.....

Although, im trying not to mention Dio's lyrics.

Sunshine, rainbows, chains, wizards, stars and towers spring to mind for some reason :D

(Have you heard the song Dio by Tenacious D? - i think its v funny)

I've seen Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate and Rob Halford all share a stage together.

IMHO the three best metal vocalists ever.

Ooo blimey - I don't remember them! I was too busy trying not to fall off the balcony in the Liverpool Royal Court whilst headbanging :D I do remember him singing a blinding Mannish Boy mind you

That phrase rings a bell though...

Heaven & Hell isn't a BAD album - it has a couple of great tunes. But anything to the standard of War Pigs? Children Of The Grave? no chance.

I haven't heard the whole of "Heaven and Hell", but from what I have it's like comparing chalk and cheese. "H and H" (from what I've heard of it) is a much more straightforward hard rock album than either "Masters of Reality" or "Paranoid", but it's got tons of power and virtuosity. I say it deserves to be considered amongst the best of Sabbath's output.

what bothers me is that when i voted dio i thought i'd be the only one, as it is bloody obvious that ronnie james dio is a complete and total muppet.

thank christ for this post, i thought i'd gone mental.

I never knew Tony Martin was in Sabbath. Was that before or after he shot those kids who tried to burgle his farm?

Benny Hill?

I think it's unfair and unrepresentative to include Rob Halford in this poll. He was just helping out.

Maybe, but he still did a good job apparently. If you're talking about the late 1992 concert, he took some trouble to match his vocal style to the songs (according to the review I read - I haven't heard the recording).

Ah, but the question is who is the best vocalist :p

no, the question is who is the best Sabbath vocalist and clearly this title belongs to Ozz and Ozz alone

Noticed that you missed Ian Gillan out of the poll but no matter cos its still Ozzy by a mile.

Gillan agreed to join sabbath after Iommi and Butler had got him pissed, so much so that he couldn't remember it the following day until his agent rang to say "Ian, i'd appreciate it if you would consult me before making major career decisions!", Ian- "What are you talking about?" Agent- "Apparently last night you agreed to join Black Sabbath!" :D

wasn't he in Judas Priest??

He also managed to get himself into Sabbath for about a blink of an eye so yes, he technically counts as an ex-vocalist. Even if he did realise his error pretty quickly! :D

I voted for RJD, but I give 'much props' to Tony Martin. He sang during a very underrated period for the band, and he sang bloody well.

I thought he said he joined the Sabs for the money?

"Zero the Hero" off their album ("Born Again") is good IMO. Apparently though (from reading Ian's autobiography) their tour together was a hilarious disaster. He (Gillan) couldn't read the lyrics at one gig because of the dry ice machine. So, he got down really low in order to see them better and someone shouted out "Look, it's Ronnie Dio"!

Wish I'd seen that.

Gotta admit though I can see the point of people who say they weren't Black Sabbath without Ozzy, he gave them character and uniqueness as a band and had a vocal style that was totally his own (though it's been copied since). A bit like Van Halen without David Lee Roth are just another very good hard rock band.
