The Office: An American Workplace

I know I'm never gonna watch Walking Dead cos there's 9 fucking series of it and I really dig zombies!
It's really not worth it. Looks like it might be at one point but then it just goes round in circles and dies.
Like most series, they should have written a story first.

The Walking Dead is good until after the first series with Neagan. The later stuff is all a bit too domestic. Though I love the actor-king.

I think it had already lost its way by then, just going over the same shit, but it could have brought it back. It's around where I left anyway. I think from the start it was dragging things out too much, and quite quickly got a bit repetitive and slow. As I recall the only way I could power through was to be drinking.

One thing that has really annoyed me is that in the later episodes the US trend of short titles is being used. . . . however they have just edited the final chord with the full on band onto the first piano only opening bar. How flipping hard would it have been to have just recorded a piano playing that final chord gently rather than having a sudden and massive full on band explosion out of nowhere!!

I'm also quite interested in the subtle introduction of the camera crew. I'm sure it will come to nothing, but it's made me crave a sudden episode from their point of view. . . like the tail enders before being integrated into the lost cast.

Oh hang on the boom guy is obviously becoming a Pam distraction (just got fired). So it's obviously only being used for one specific and unimaginative reason. Boo.

OK so Dwight is now the office boss, but this time everyone is inexplicably happy about it.
Why is he now the quirky guy rather than the arsehole?
Also why isn't the senator sorting out the monetary situation with his wife and child?

It's all going unnecessarily pear shaped writing wise.

Oh I'd totally lost it by that point. Everyone playing at being ultra-funny hyper characteristic office oddballs just reeks of Saturday Night Live sketches. Which are almost entirely 100% unfunny.

Right. And now Jim can't spend three months sorting that job thing because of Pam? WTF? It's like they are trying really hard to make it as bullshit as possible before it ends so they can come back for another series saying season 9 was obviously all a dream Dwight had.

Oh yeah, SNL is really weird. The sketches are all basic ideas that go nowhere and just end. Makes me really appreciate the two Ronnies. There doesn't have to be a massive kick in the balls punchline, but there does need to be an end or direction.
It's like a tiny 'what if' in joke you have with friends in the pub that just fizzles out.

I've just got past the dinner party episode, which I thought was good but also felt quite different to a lot of the series so far? Idk, I suppose maybe I just like bleakness and that episode felt closer to Peep Show territory or something than a lot of regular US Office. I think Jan is one of the worst/most notable examples of the inconsistent writing mentioned above, though - from being basically a "straight" character who worked because her being like a normal corporate executive highlighted Michael's dysfunction in contrast to whatever the fuck she is now.

She has always been pretty dysfunctional. I think the doris day thing was genius but i dont think you're up to there yet.

She wasn't at the beginning. In fact it was totally weird that she got together with the office manager guy.
The personalities and just keep flipping to fit the writing. Perhaps it didn't seem so mad when it all took place over 10 years, but watching all together 'stop frame' style certainly highlights the inconstancies.

Just on the last episode now.
One thing that has struck me is how the gay guy was originally a great 'straight man' (excuse the pun) who showed up the normal TV and film tropes about gay men (with plenty of eye rolls). In the last few episodes especially, he has become the typical TV gay man, (knows all about fashion matches, doesn't know how to act around straight men).

The final few episodes with the wedding and final goodbyes are perfect.
So far I am not feeling this at all. It's like a race to the finish, with personalities and past stories flipping just so that everything comes clumsily together to fit into the final script. Boo.

I started watching this again, never got all the way through to where ever it was last time. I was only up to the basket ball game last night but fell asleep and stopped it some time in the small hours. with it still playing.

Can't be arsed rewinding, will continue from wherever. I like it more this time round though.

He's not even gay at the start.

BTW it all goes pretty rubbish when Michael leaves.

If I were to watch it for the third time I might duck out then. Although I did like the wedding final episode

I didn't dig the final wedding episode that much. It was alright but it wasn't a finale.
I think Michael leaving was handled quite well considering. I didn't even miss him at the doc screening at first, but then of course I did remember that of course he would have moved heaven and earth to be there, and not just saved it for the 'best man' surprise.
The most horrific and depressing part was how much Jim laid it all on thick about this shit job being the best worst thing ever and that your job really is your life. Holy shit.

I'm pleased that this has become an enduring character despite having 4 minutes screen time ever.
Recently I noticed Chrissie Teagan and John Legend have him on a cushion on their settee.

Some of the minor storylines have been excellent.
Like when Michael met a new woman and was all in love. He then found out she was married and agreed with them all that he had to break up with her.
Pam gave them all a briefing the next day about how to handle Michael after a break up "Don't sympathise with him - he'll just wallow. Keep it light and watch his favourite YouTube clips with him".

When he turned up he was all cheery whilst maintaining he had broken up with her.
But they all guessed he had not by his demeanour.

I watched that only last week or so, but don't remember it with as much fondness. It was all getting stupid by then, or maybe it was all just too many episodes of stupidness.

I just watched the episode where Michael went to Pam's art exhibition and bought her painting before telling her how proud he was of her. Very underrated moment that one.
