The new speed cameras....and accidents caused by the current ones...

Right firstly before everyone hammers in about speed kills and only speed kills I was doing my commute this morning on my motorbike North london to Kent and came out of the blackwall tunnel and then after a period this road turns to 50mph then a bit further on you get a speed camera.....

I can't believe that camera is still there - it is so dangerous.

I know this won't be popular but I suppose people could just learn to drive in a reasonable manner, watch the road and stick to the speed limits.
Still, never happen as it means drivers would actually be responsable for them selves instead of blaming the fucking camera for their stupidity.

Doesn't exactly take us forward very far, though, does it? I guess it comes down to how badly we want 3000 people a year NOT to die on the roads. And how much we're prepared to use our brains to come up with creative and imaginative solutions, rather than just persisting with the "hit it with a bigger hammer" approach.

I was rather hoping people would use their brains to stay in control of their vehicles.
Too much to hope for really.

I think you're exaggerating the problem, and being a bit defeatist about any solution! We didn't make the headway we achieved with drink driving by either going mad on enforcement or rolling our eyes at the stupidity of drivers, and there's no reason why speeding/dangerous driving should be that much different.

Perhaps your pessimism is born of the lack of progress we've made in the last decade at reducing the levels of KSI on the roads? Might that not actually be an endorsement of the views of those who say that the current methods are clearly not working, and we need to try something new?

The sign you've shown is an advisory limit. It it not a compulsory legal maximum speed. Although in seriously adverse conditions ignoring it could perhaps be construed as driving without due care and attention ... but that would be rare.

This is perhaps the sign you meant:

Not a lot of people are aware of that subtle distinction ...

And that subtle distinction is further blurred by a tendency I've noticed round here to post "advisory" speed limit road signs that are identical in all respects to the mandatory ones except that they have a black border around the circular sign rather than a red one.

I think it's a clear attempt to cause confusion, and can only be a further distraction to a driver as he squints at each speed restriction to see if it's mandatory or an advisory restriction. Another example of how we seem to be moving away from the spirit of the whole thing about road safety into attempts on the one hand to mislead, and on the other to "catch out" errant motorists.

It would, provided enough fuckwits actually KNEW their highway code. I've lost count fo the number of time I've been following cars on dual carriageways that suddenly slow from 70-80 down to 50-60 for a speed camera. They clearly don't understand the concept of the National Speed Limit. If more of them understood lane discipline too, driving would be a much more pleasant experience because there would be significantly less congestion.

Everyone duly slows down casing traffic jams.
:D:D:D

(Yeah right ....maybe it's because I only drive on motorways on my way to and from holidays ....)

As a cyclist I already know what speed to travel at during the course of my commute for maximum efficiency and traffic flow ...

What are the point of these?

They seem keep popping up to slow the traffic down for no reason.

A clear road and then suddenly these come on flashing 50. Everyone duly slows down casing traffic jams.

Throughput (vehicles/hour) is maximised at 50mph. FACT.

If they're sometimes turned on a bit before the congestion's formed up or a bit after it's cleared - boo-hoo, your journey may take a few seconds longer and your dick will shrink.
