The "my ****** has broken down" thread

Sounds like a rear brake shoe come adrift and jamming against the drum. (Not applicable if discs on the rear, obviously)

read brake shoe collapsed - the whole thing just fell apart and had to be replaced. Garage said it was just a coincidence that it happened right after the service, but only charged for the part, not labour.

My 02' reg fiesta has a problem. On long journeys on the motorway my temp guage goes through the roof. Cue, heaters on full blast to draw the heat from the engine... this does bring the guage down but is obviously pretty annoying.

Im not 100% sure, but i think its glugging water alot aswell. Could all this be thermostat???

Also (sorry) keep having my emissions light comin on. Me mechanic mate (before i moved house) checked it all out and said the emmissions levels were actually fine and that it could be my lambda sensor on the way out giving false readings? Does this sound about right? If so is it easy to replace meself. Changed the one on my old corsa so im guessing it cant be too different.

cheers.

If its drinking water for a past time that will probably be why its over heating. Any puddles underneath it when its parked up. And take the oil filler cap off and have a look in there. Is there any sign of mayonaisse stuff ?

It could be a leaking gasket, a hose, a thermostat, a solenoid, rad leak, one of a million things.

Have a look and let us know what you find

No puddles. I'll have a look at the other things tomorrow in the daylight and get back.

It’s ok,

No mayo is a good thing. It means it's unlikely there water getting in the oil, which means that it’s all sealed up nicely.

No puddles means, no leaky pipes, radiators or connectors. Which is good too.

So apart from an airlock in the rad, which you can sort out by running the engine with the radiator cap off, get it good and hot with the fan kicking in and fill up the rad to the top. keep it running for a good 15 minutes, if there is an air lock the water level will just drop, so you fill it up with water again. keep doing it until it doesn't happen.

To check the thermostat. Firstly let the engine cool down and then locate it.

In the Fiesta Zetec engines I think you'll find it usually on the righthand side of the engine. (looking from the front). It’s in a housing, on the engine end of a big hose that goes to the top of the radiator.

If you can find that we're laughing
I can’t get a specific photo but the housing will look similar to this

A thermostat looks like this

So if you found it and can get it off. Take it inside give it a bit of a clean and
the drop it in a pan of boiling water. If it does nothing its fooked. If the valve at the top opens up about an inch it’s ok so you can put it back.

They really are cheap about a tenner.

hope that helps

cheers!!

will give that a go on me day off(thur)

need a new lamda sensor anyway, so if the thermo is fooked i can get em together.

thumbs up for this thread :D:D

Assuineb that you in its range, its probably likely that the batteries in the key are getting duff, or the connector in the keys fooked maybe cos it got wet or something. They can also decode if you keep clicking it out of range of the car or you spend a fair whack of time under power lines. It is very easy to click the key when out of ragne. . .eg sitting down with the keys in a back pocket.

The later problem does in some motors get sorted by using the key in the ignition. It reconnects it and all is ticketty boo again.

Now if its a battery the cars new and still in warranty they should replace it for you in the dealers, however if its old get down halfords. Mostly they use cr2032 batteries I think. and the owners manual for the car will have how to replace them.

So when you get into the key give it a good clean as well to make sure those connections are good.

Hope that helps and if not let me know make model etc and i'll se what I can find.

It's not being out of range. i can be right next to it pressing the button like a madman

but decoding is a possibility

i cant see how i would clean it. it's just a normal saab key like this

The key-fob should be able to be pulled apart (refer to manual as sods law dictates brute force not prevailing), the connectors mentioned would be; Battery: Underneath & one to the side for - & + terminals. Buttons: Underneath the the rubber mount which makes the buttons go 'click'. Lil' bits of moisuture can seep in to cause a week connection.

if I take it part I'll never get it back together , or if I do there'll be a bit left over :o

I better take it to the garage to be looked at by a man in overalls.

I cant actually see that pic for some reason. I get the little red cross, nevertheless saab keys take apartness.

Should be one of two methods:

If its a SAAB 9-3 it should be a case of

Extract the mechanical key bit by pressing the Saab logo on the back of the key. It comes apart along the curved line between the logo and the keyring loop. I pull the key out by the keyring.
Once key is removed you can see the small rectangular slot into which you twist a screwdriver (or the end of the key). The body of the key splits in half and the battery is revealed

and on the 9-5 there a little hole in the side, Push mini screwdriver into hole and lever off cover to reveal battery. Carfeul you dont ping any tabs off inside the key.

But if its still in warranty.... TAKE IT TO THE DEALERS

And its when it apart that you can give it a good blow out/clean. get all thsoe bits fo fluff gunk and crud out.

Oh and afterwards you may have to stand virtually next to it (within 20ft, apparently the range on the kesy is pants and its a saab safety feature) and hit unlock about 7 times for it to recode.

Dya know I think it sounds like yours is decoding.
Do you put your keys in you back pocket and sit on them all day ?

My 1903 De Dion Bouton Populaire car is sounding like a bag of nails at the moment. Is it the cold weather do you think or is it time I traded it in for something more modern for my 55 mile round trip to work? It is the 700 cc model. I think I should have invested in the 932 cc model when I first got it because I carry a lot of heavy stuff with me.

What do you suggest as a replacement that will give me the same smooth gear changes and superior ride that I have got used to.

if i open up the key neither it nor the car will ever work again so it's in the garage next week to be fixed :o

Ah you'd be alright if ya did there not a lot you can do to it to feck them up. Mine went in mine for a while and I went to change the battery I foiund it was fulll of fluff, around the connectors After a good blow and it was as good as new.

BUT the point really is is if its still under warranty take it back. It's there for a reason so use it.
