The Microsoft Zune

OK. so if I have an Ipod and 2 PCs. One PC has a load of MP3's I legally rippped from my own CD collection.
How do I put them on the Ipod?
Then how do I copy them off the Ipod on to the other PC?

Maybe I am wrong. but i understood I'd need at least Itunes on the first PC and some other bit of software on the second one to read the Ipod's MP3 files.

Nope.

You transfer the music to your ipod from Computer A (using either itunes or another program to do so). To copy them to the other computer you connect the ipod to computer B, tell it not to sync to the new library (only happens if you've itunes on computer B) and then open the ipod up as a USB drive.

Once open set it to show hidden files and then copy the music folder (may be cunningly hidden in a sub folder) to your hard drive. Voila!

It's harder for Macs apparently, but it's doable.

Well just a question of preference I suppose. That to me is more inconvenient than using the thing I've got. Rip CD with Goldwave. Copy files on to MP3 player.
Copy off as desired.

That's it.

Yes and no, for me it's:

Rip files with itunes, send to ipod using same software.
Copy files to new computer as desired (it's drag and drop once you know where the file is)

Done.

Actually it would be that simple for me. Except the thing's buggered at the moment.
So it's back to CD's for now.
:(

If you set up itunes the right way, you don't even have to touch the computer. Insert the CD and 1-CDDB info automatically. 2-Ripped automatically and saved with sensible filenames. 3- Automatically synced with ipod. "Out of the box" it only takes one click (auto-rip is disabled by default)

Your method uses two different programs and at least 10 clicks, right? And could you tell your gran how to do it and never have to tell her again? That's what the ipod does and that's part of the reason it's so succesful. You don't need to know what 'rip' 'mp3' 'copy' 'dragndrop' 'usb' 'mass storage' means. Plug in. Insert disk. Click flashy button. Done. That's mass appeal, and I guarantee you it will be harder with the Zune.

The biggest advantage of iTunes for me is the fact it organises everything so well.

I used to spend ages creating artist folders, album folders, and renaming files etc. iTunes has saved me hours and hours of hassle.

I use this to get tunes off of the iPod (useful as itunes renames all the tunes on the ipod to things like WTGYR.MP3 so it's hardwork finding the tune even if you've made the folder visible):

ipod Access.

I *ahem* used a keycrack... but it's only 12 euro

Even easier, use something like PodUtil... Its shareware but I'm sure you could use something else... Another handy thing about iTunes is you can use the same program to play the songs as well as move them to the iPod. Less mouse clicks...

Personally, I don't move mp3s around. If I need to recharge my iPod I usually plug into my computer at work and control it via RythmnBox...

It's been "revealed": Link

Brown is the new white, according to Microsoft which last night revealed its answer to the iPod and surprised industry watchers with its choice of colours. Alongside white and black versions of the Zune player, which make it look similar to Apple's iPod, it will be available in brown.

As well as a 30GB memory that can store 7,500 songs or 40 hours of video, it includes an FM radio and built-in wireless technology that allows music sharing with other Zune users. The company also gave notice of a Zune phone.

Big enough init?

I like the fact that it's WiFi but considering the size of the new shuffle I think they've fucked up on the size of it.

Yeah the size is an issue but it'll probably shrink over time. I must say going current info and the look of it I reckon they might have a real contender here for the MP3 market...

So... A few days after Apple previews an vertically-integrated movie store, Microsoft previews a mp3 player & music store... ("Preview" rather than launch, unless its already the 2006 "holiday"). Nice to see Microsoft "innovating" as usual...

Btw, from Slashdot: Look at the White "Zune". Those people are walking in the water near New Yorks Brookyln Bridge... And its about as clean as the Thames' water...!

And thats wifi to share (drm'd) songs with another Zune user. How many times are you going to do that...?

I won't buy it because it's micro$oft anyway. They fuck off with their world domination of fucking everything.
Though I must say the new iPod nano's look proper shit. But I'm quietly impressed by the new shuffle.

Hey don't go all Mac Zealot on me! MS obviously timed this to fuck with Apple, it's business. Apple would have done the same if the situation was reversed (I've a sneaking suspicion Apple purposely held off the full screen iPod Video to see what the Zune would be like...).

MS has a lot of resources and an interesting idea to tie their devices/platforms together with live anywhere. Apple haven't got a games division or a console to link the iPod too where as MS has. Also there are slight indicators a backlash is coming which could hurt sales and thus market share.

Interesting times ahead methinks...

I posted this on the other thread, but perhaps it's more relevant here:

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but the hype for the Zune seems distinctly underwhelming. It seems like it's a rebadged Toshiba mp3 player with a fairly ugly design and 30gig of space. And it will come in white, black and - wait for it - brown.

It's seems to have a quoted battery life of only 12 hours, which is likely to fall sharply if you actually use the wifi functionality. And its unique selling point, because we like to share music according to MS, is that you can beam a few songs to a nearby Zune, allowing the recipient to play any of these DRM songs a maximum of 3 times over 3 days. Yes, we like to share music, but who the hell's going to get excited about the possibility of transferring rights protected files when they just could just use the same unrestricted p2p networks and computer transfers as before?

They haven't been confident enough to declare a price point so far (I guess they were waiting for Apple's new releases) no music store ready and little mention of any UK/Euro release.

Microsoft claims it's willing to sink a lot of money in getting the Zune successfully launched, predicting that it'll take a few years to properly compete with the ipod. But by that stage surely convergence between phones, mp3 players and the like will be increasingly apparent. It seems a strange, belated and distinctly unimpressive release to me.

Zune Phone en route

I wonder if they'll try and beat the release of the much awaited iphone.

Or wait and try and copy its features

:D

LOL! Probably! It's looking like a bit of game of chicken in a way both companies want to release something spectular but not wanting to be trumped by the other...

How is releasing a product that Apple did 5 years ago fucking with their business. Oh, and its not available for another three months... I bet Steve Jobs is quaking with teh FEAR...!

Given that Apple screwed up the first attempt at the iPhone, last year by restricting it to a 250 track maximum (abeit in cooperation with Motorola), one wonders if such a concept will work, given that Nokia & Sony-Eriksson have launched their MP3player/Phone versions....

Oh dear I fear you've lost me to your Mac world of purity!:p

Nah. That was never an iphone and Steve Jobs was quite clear in washing his hands of it - they merely licensed the itunes software to longterm partner Motorola.

There'll be a huge difference between an Apple branded iphone and a bit of clumsily rebadged Motorola kit. I'm still not convinced Apple can successfully pull an market leading phone out of the bag, but it'll be a hell of a lot better than that Motorola effort.

Are you only here as an obnoxious macbot?

I think you might be right there. I may use a mac as well as a pc, but I sometimes wish patronising old jæd would go take a running jump. If it's any compensation, he's an arse when he's talking about subjects other than macs as well.

:)

Yes. Everyone knows that.

Oh right.

Anyway, some in action vids. Going by this there seems to be a lot of clicking to get it to do anything. Not good, I like the iPod because you get to your music fast:

That said on the second vid it shows sending pix, it connects and sends in under ten seconds. Very sweet.
