The Mark Steel Lectures

Stewart Lee's got the measure of the man.
After a particularly nauseating interview with Ben Elton on the radio - I re-watched the DVD in question and added the quote to Wikipedia - Probably not the right thing to do as it's not particularly neutral!:)

Anyway - it's been taken back down now - but here it is;

---

Stewart Lee is a frequent critic of Ben Elton. On his 2005 'Stand Up Comedian' DVD, Stewart says "More people like Osama bin Laden, A multiple murderer than Ben Elton. Why? I think it's because when you compare the two of them, Osama bin Laden has at least lived his life to a consistent set of ethical principles."

and

"People hate Ben Elton, Every now and again, a journalist has the courage why he thinks this is.... Parkinson said to him "Ben Elton, why do you think everyone hates you?" and Ben Elton said "Well Micheal, It's because in this country, people don't like success", But he was wrong about that. The real answer is much more simple, its that in this country, people don't like Ben Elton. And they don't hate him through the conduit of the notion of success, they hate him entirely on his own terms, because of who he is, and the bad things that he's done".

Actions for which Ben Elton has attracted criticisms include, Working with Queen, who broke the cultural embargo on South Africa during apartheid . Working with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and co-writing a song that was performed at the inauguration of president George W. Bush. When questioned on this, Elton remarked that he didn't see it as a celebration of George W. Bush, more a celebration of the President of the United States of America.

Truly. He may pay acts well but its all that shite you have to go through to get it (i.e. communicate with him).

i last went to a show about 10 years ago. Mark Thomas and Lee Evans both on the bill (when it was at the Shakespeare's Head). Evans was very late - and very apologetic. Eugene berated him, really laid into him, in clear hearing of the audience..

Lee Evans always had a reputation for turning up late or just before he was due to go on. :D

That's because at the Tuns he gets the room for free, so he just has to split the pot 4 ways or whatever it is.

And did I mention that he stinks?

He's also the worst warm-up in history. Everyone who hasn't been before looks around going:

What.
The.
Fuck.
Is.
This?
