The Mark Steel Lectures

Don't especially enjoy his stand up - I've seen him twice (once on a mixed bill, once solo) and it was all a bit ranty and shouty.

But I think the lectures are really good TV - well written, well presented, and good visually as well as informative (his Charlie Chaplin biog was excellent).

I'd like to see him do a 'Beginners guide to Marxism' show - I reckon he'd do a really good job of it.

And for anyone who missed it, keep an eye on the BBC4 schedules as they often repeat them there.

I remember him copping a bit of stick from Hislop on Have I Got News a coupla years ago. But judging from more recent appearances all seems to have been forgiven. I've come around to his stylings slowly but surely.

Heh...there was a question about the EU and Hislop went into EU-autorant about corruption, persecution of whistleblowers etc and Steel said something like 'I'm sat next to the Daily Mail', which given that Hislop was making many salient points was a bit harsh, and Hislop responded in kind...

Anyone got a email address for Mark Steel?
I've been trying to invite him down to Offline.
PM if you have it!

ooh that would be ace to see him in person.

I don't think he's SWP any more, it's more how he got into activism.

His autobiog "Reasons to be Cheerful" is thoroughly recommended.

I think the 'lectures' are consitantly very good - informative and funny and with a refreshing perspective - the Harriet Tubman one is a fine example. Hes witty and - despite the trot tax - is instinctively on the side of those taking on authority and/or fighting oppresion.

And 'reasons to be cheerful' is an excellent read - its not a meatly philosophoical tome and its not full of incisive political analysis (he is a trot after all) - but as an account of growing up and getting political in the 80s its top.

I love this programme! Afaik, Steel is no longer a swappie.
I'm glad we agree on something!

There are a couple of radio ads at the moment which feature either Mark Steel or someone who sounds just like him, one is for ATS Euromaster and the other for Immodium Plus with Sue Perkins. Is it a soundalike or has he sold out?

I thought his book was mediocre - his lectures vary from poor to very good depending on how close they relate to Trot obsessions. Seems like a nice bloke, if misguided in places, to me though.

But would definitely recommend the lectures to people as worth watching.

I hope not, reminds me of when Alexei Sayle started doing adds for Texaco. Quite horrible.

I thought the book was excellent. Like Things can only get Better, but better!

That's like saying it was like dry muesli but with bananas in.

sorry, didn't like that book (if it's the John O'Farrell one)

I enjoyed the O'Farrell one, but when I read Reasons to be cheerful I realised how much better it could have been done.

I'm not always that disagreeable, you know.;)

I hope he hasn't sold out, that would be a real disappointment. Whereas Ben Elton was always like that (a sell out).

Seen just now - Mark Steel on his bike, very sensibly wearing his cycling helmet too.

The famous son of Croydon was cycling along Addiscombe road and I stopped to let him out. When I realised who it was I yelled "You are Mark Steel and I claim my £5"....which I think threw him a little and nearly caused him to fall off his bike!

All very strange as I was reading this thread this morning..

His book is ok

Eh? According to my info, Steel comes from Swanley.

These are on BBC2 at 11.20 for the next 2 Thursdays.

on 14th he covers Thomas Paine and on the 21st its Sylvia Pankhurst.

He plays a man on his skiing holiday in an episode of Red Dwarf we just watched. Either that, or it's another mark steel who does telly :)

i thought it was shit and i've enjoyed Steel's radio shows so thought i would this.

his delivery was pedestrian, like he was reading over the cameraman's shoulder. and the 'rasta' crap/ref to Haile Selassi was really lazy and worthy of silly 6th form humour.
