The main thing wrong with RnB music is...

yeh, because RnB is one great big homogenous whole with no variety or differences in quality.

next: reggae. It all sounds the same.

It's obviously not a homogeneous whole, but all RnB has something in common, otherwise it wouldn't be RnB. I don't think it's unreasonable to be of the opinion that there is something not right about the thing that all RnB has in common. I like quite a lot of Techno and Drum and Bass, but I can understand why many people (my mum and dad, for instance) find it all unbearable.

because its not real Rhythm and Blues

The term Rhythm and Blues was coined by Jerry Wexler, who wrote for Billboard magazine, in 1948 as an alternative to the term 'race music', which had come to be seen as offensive. It was an umbrella term for any music made by and popular with black people in the US. RCA records also adopted the term to market 'black' music.

What you mean by 'real' R'n'B is just popular music made by black musicians in the US in the years following Billboard adopting the term for their chart of music made by black people, up to the early 60s when popular 'black' music in the US developed a new sound which was called 'soul'.

Billboard continued to use the term for their chart right through the soul, funk and disco years, all because they were predominatly 'black' music. In the 80s a new style of music orginiated made by black US musicians, combining soul, funk, hip-hop. Originally confined to the New Jack Swing scene, it developed beyond this and rather than come up with a new name for this new 'black' music, it reverted to calling it R'n'B.

So modern R'n'B isn't some new scene stealing the name from music from the late 40s to early 60s, but rather the result of an ongoing evolution of the music made by black people in the US. It's similar to the way that modern 'rock' music has little in common with 'rock' music from the 50s and early 60s. Do people get in a huff when Kings of Leon are described as rock, although it doesn't sound anything like Jerry Lee Lewis?

I am generally guilty of saying that RnB is all shit and then taking my own argument down :o I do think that it's a genre that makes fantastic singles but I rarely like whole albums. Lauren Hill's Miseducation is one of the few that I liked all the way through....TLC never made an entire album I could listen to - I'd do a lot of track skipping.

RnB covers a far wider spectrum than Techno and DnB though. And whilst I love techno and Drum and Bass, it's easy to see how something more alien, louder, fastier and bassier can disagree with delicate, often superannuated, ears.

But to rail against melody and technically often outstanding vocals? There's something a bit different there - unless there's some weird, hard to justify dislike of 'urban' voices or something.

Fair enough. The recent tune American Boy (sorry, I'm extremely ignorant about current music but I think that's what it's called) is a pleasant song, and I suppose that would be classed as RnB. Most of the RnB that I hear, though, has an earnest, self-regarding sincerity that makes me want to listen to The Ramones or something to detox from it.

New Jack Swing ftw

SWV - Right Here. Loved it.

Bit of a late-comer to the genre (got a job where RnB was forced upon me) and there are some gems amongst the muck.

Ha ha ha, yes :D

and can anyone remember a signer called ERic something....i have still not remembered his surname after asking on here a few years ago...  can't remember what he sang either ....:o i need to go rummage through all the old tapes that are still in my mums shed!

Eric Benet or Eric Roberson perhaps?

:)

...the way it's sold.

And the fact that every time a producer comes up with a new quirk, every other producer jumps on the bandwagon, so you get consecutive waves of sound-alike tunes.

that its had far to much of an influence on pop music meaning that every girl group from the last 15 years gets called r n b.

Theres some allright stuff about like jodeci, mary j blidge, usher, genuwine, akon(if theres a decent rapper on the track) and umm pooissibly some others but theres about 10 tonnes of shite you have to sift through to find anything worth listning to.
