The main thing wrong with RnB music is...

I guess my main problem with the genre is that I just don't know enough about it to find anything good, I only really know about the chart dross labelled as R&B - slow, turgid ballads, backed by what sounds like an 80s casio keyboard and sung by people with fuck all talent*

So, if anyone has any recommendations for stuff that can persuade me the genre has something going for it I'd love to hear them :)

*based on the staggering amounts of auto tune being used

I'll pm you

:)

...it's SHIT.
And it can't even think of it's own name.
the interesting thing about most music trev, is that the way it sound actually changes with each new generation of artists.

something i guess you don't know a huge amount about, but i thought it was worth throwing it in there... :p

actually, one of the things that disapoints me slightly about most r&b nights i've been to is that they only seem to play the big tunes - i'm by no means an afficionado of the stuff, but i always know 95% of the tunes being played - where do the new tracks get broken?

That is probably true for a great many nights unless they are specifically marketed as being a place where newer music and artists will be played. I wonder if strict commercial pressures are responsible too - some folks don't like to have to listen to anything too new and are far more comfortable with what they know - either in terms of artists or predominant production style that happens to be popular at that time.

I get the impression that you are fairly open minded Killer B when it comes to music - certainly not everyone is the same as you.

:)

...far too much of it involves substituting creativity, passion and talent with frequent repetition of the word "baby".

oh, it's certainly true of most genre nights, i'd guess - i have similar gripes with metal & indie nights. i did spend much of the last 15 years going to techno nights though, where you're lucky if you recognise more than 10% of the tunes all evening, so i'm used to not having a clue what the fuck's on... :D

god knows. it all sounds ace when you're in a club what plays it though, which is what matters...

this is true ime.

i was at a party where only RnB was being played (the modern sort lol) and even though it's not my kind of music, it was great, had a good and friendly atmosphere - and i danced all night long. :)

ken, you just reminded me of D'Angelo. what was that album where he's on the front in sepia? i think it was his first 'big' one...

Brown Sugar I think? Either that or Voodoo. It's shagging music basically, isn't it?

i've got d'angelo's first album foo, do you want me to burn you copy for your crimbo present? :D

A lot of what is described today as R'n'B is in fact soulless corporate pap, topped off with vacant twiddly vocal wankery.

That said, much of the best music ever made has been r 'n' b.

it's only £3.99 on Amazon. i think i might buy it for meself. :)

you can buy me something expensive.

dagnamit

on a side note, i was well into rnb when i was a yoot (although we called it new jack swing to start with :hmm: )

Ha ha ha, yes :D

and can anyone remember a signer called ERic something....i have still not remembered his surname after asking on here a few years ago...  can't remember what he sang either ....:o i need to go rummage through all the old tapes that are still in my mums shed!

Yep. TLC looked like renegades escaping from a painters job.

I fairly recently loaded Jodeci back onto my computer and subsequently ipod - it's fucking awful really, but back then it seemed alright for some reason. It's a feeling not best helped by the knowledge that an ex was a huge Jodeci fan - I can only wince now when I relisten to her 'romantic' background music
:D
