I've just been re-watching the Ralph Bashki animated version. It's interesting to compare where Bashki chose to cut the story in comparison to Jackson. Seeing as he managed to trim the best part of 1 and 1/2 books it to a animated feature that was very much going against the grain at the time. I always thought Bashki's Orcs and Black Riders were scarier than Jacksons. The bit where the hobbits cower from the Black Rider whilst escaping the Shire is almost identical to the animated version, a tribute by Jackson maybe? Anyway the expressiveness of the anmated one still make it fantastic to watch today...
