The Longest Day

I remember seeing "the longest day" when it first screened in the UK.
At the time it was the biggest film of the year.
The many cameo's by the actors of the day was not to my taste.
A good film for its time, but dated now.

genius! bob Peck was in that, and is indeed fantastic. one of the most under-rated actors in the history of erm historyness...

Best war films..

das boot (just best film ever really)
downfall (happy laugh a minte romp through wartime berlin)
the cruel sea (happy laugh a minute romp on the briny sea)
Land & Freedom (ken loach film about spanish civil war)
Ice Cold in Alex (genius)
No Man's land (film about bosnian war)

oh, and the landing sequences in the longest day are only better than saving private ryan if you're an alien. sorry

It's "spot the star" time isn't it? :D
It's a pity because it really distracts me from the story.

As for war films, has anyone mentioned the first few scenes of "A Matter of Life and Death" yet?
That radio conversation describes the futility of war quite well. :(

There's also a film with Gregory Peck as a Russian resistance fighter. I can never remember the title, but it was very effective.

I've also got a soft spot for "Ice cold in Alex".

The landing scenes are far better than that Tom Hanks bollox

Funny that the men who were actually there didn't say that isn't it?

For general chest thumping fun I'd say 633 Squadron, cos I loved the Mosquito as a plane; for massively harrowing viewing, Come and See. As a great piece of filmmaking, Das Boot.

Altho it's not a war movie at all, I found the WW2 era Heimat to be quite brilliant (of course, the whole of Heimat is brilliant).

I don't want realism, I want Hollywood. I want our heroes charging up the beach, blowing up machine gun nests and liberating the stereotyped Frenchie farmers as the Germans scream 'aiiiiieeee!' in a high pitched way when they get offed.

My grandad was on the beaches, I've heard what it was like ta. I want fantasy
