The Long Overdue 'This Is Spinal Tap' Appreciation Thread.

I think most premier league metal bands think/hope they had some bearing or influence on the film.

My money would be a combo of Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake and Sabbath.

Status Quo, Saxon, Judas Priest, Aerosmith, Queen, The Who - every bombastic rocknroll band who were prominent in the 70s really. There's a Status Quo doc called Rock On And On which is almost as funny as Spinal Tap.

Spinal Tap followed Saxon about for a bit before they filmed, so I think some of the mannerisms of Spinal Tap are based on them

Ian Gillan claims that he spent alot of time talking to the scriptwriters about his time with Sabbath in 1983 (I think) including the "larger than lifesize" stonehenge.

I also found this clip of early sabbath (from yorkshire television) on youtube.
It is from their 1970 Paris gig (all of which was filmed) but they obviously shot some rockumentary footage as well.

They went on the road with Saxon, bit I'm not aware that Saxon were the inspiration for the band.

Indeed, I saw / heard somewhere maybe a band member of Saxon saying something about how funny it was with all the different venue's they played and losing their way back stage when they were about to go onstage as the headline act. :D

Do you remember that part in the Spinal Tap movie ?

The voice of a bunch of the Simpsons characters Harry Shearer ...

My local Blockbuster has the DVD in the Music/Documentary section! I think the person who categorised the movie wasn't quite the sharpest knife in the draw .... they also have a fish Called Wanda in the Drama section as well...

Whichever one lost the most drummers, surely? :D

Wasn't quite sure where to put this, seeing as the lovable lads of Spinal Tap (and their many, many deceased drummers) aren't technically a proper band nor are they entirely a spoof having played live on a number of occasions.

But the film remains, for me anyway, one of the great satires of our time and always has me in stitches every time I see it. It just never seems to grow old for me.

So, what's your favourite song/moment/film scene featuring the mighty Tap?

Rather predictably...

Well, they're not a 'real' band, but then again they sort of are and their fame exceeds a mere film having released at least one album IIRC.

Come on, let us revel in the mighty and awesome thunder that was (and occasionally still is) the incredible Tap!
