The Long Overdue Robert Wyatt Appreciation Thread

Take Nothing Can Stop Us. Don't you always skip Stalin Wasn't Stallin'? I do.

Nope. It's actually one of my favourite tracks on that album. I find myself humming the tune with surprising frequency. :)

(I particularly love the rhythms in the line "That they'd never rest contented till they had driven him from the land")

his last couple - Shleep and Cuckooland - are pretty similar to Comicopera, largely the same musicians and feel.

Then there was his period on Rough Trade in the early 80s - see Nothing Can Stop Us in particular, and that was preceded by a long fallow period in the 70s, but his albums before that, particularly Rock Bottom and Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard, are absolutely fantastic

Wow - lucky you LBJ....I don't even know much of his music, (the tickets were a birthday present to Dub) but he was really interesting and funny - I enjoyed myself a lot in spite of my unfamiliarity with his stuff.

There wasn't a trace of self-importance in him and he was eager to be involved in every aspect of it. He was very concerned that others should be treated properly - particularly Ivor Cutler.

He told a story last night about being on tour with Jimmy Hendrix and how courteous he was towards everyone - insisting on introducing Soft Machine to the rude press that had barged into their dressing room as they tried to interview Jimmy. Politeness seems very important to him.

just listening to Comicopera, another quite wonderful album from Mr Wyatt - well the first and last sides are wonderful, side two goes off a bit.

He's one of those 'only in England' artists I love, like Kevins Ayers & Coyne, or Cope or Moulding, a wonderful way with a tune, never bothering to overburden his songs with extraneous instruments. That said, half his solo albums are rather makeweight, but the good ones, and especially the Matching Mole ones are absolutely marvellous

Anybody remember, 'Kingdom', that song he did with Ultramarine about 10 years ago?

Brilliant :)

I loved that so much I bought the 12".

It was more like 15 years ago btw.

Cuckooland is quite good.

But I still think Stalin Wasn't Stallin sounds like a nursery rhyme. And not in a good way.

Well, as I clearly said, he has done some good stuff, and one or two excellent things. But also some dross. And that one song isn't the only dross. Indeed, every album of his has songs on it I don't like.

However, the worst - the "woeful" stuff - was when Soft Machine went wrong. And, oh lordie, did they go wrong.
