Thanks for reminding me it's time to dust this one off again this evening :)

Bob Hoskins's character is a buffoon

This seems to be a common complaint from the four people and two dogs who don't think it's a great movie; surely his self-assured buffoonery is the point? He's nowhere near as clever, or as benevolent, or as in control as he thinks he is and with every setback he regresses further back to the petty, small-minded thug he really is under his veneer of respectability.

On the Guy Ritchie tangent, I always saw Eddie Temple in Matthew Vaughn's Layer Cake as a nod to The Long Good Friday who managed to succeed in every way Shand failed.
