The London Marathon - who'se done it?

trashpony's post has just made me think of another question. for those people who have run it before where have your mates stood on the course to watch you. i'm inclined to suggest tower bridge as you go past that twice dont you? any other suggestions would be handy and i can suggest them to my g/f.

See my pmed advice

They work well - and you can get from one to the other easily and quickly and then to the end if you need to carry people home

my half marathon times were a bit quick but then i had been training for 6 months before the first one and i'd been doing lots of reps and hill work in there as well as covering a lot of miles. i'm also aiming for 9 minute miles. the 18 mile run i did yesterday was just a bit over 9 minute miles so hopefully with the crowd and other people to run with/against i should manage it. if i can get round in about 4 hours i'll be dead chuffed. good luck to you biffo as well.

Cheers Fuzzy. Hope it's not raining :)

well its now only two days away and my final week preparations have involved no running but eating shed loads of pasta. pasta salad for lunch and then cooked pasta with vegatables for tea. not sure what its doing to my digestive system but i do seem full of beans at the moment. i had the best nights sleep last in ages so am feeling well rested. the weather report on five live this morning said it would start of humid and then start raining later. hmmm. hot then cold and wet.

i've got another question. i am going to be going down to the start by myself and i'm going to be carrying a small rucksack with me. how big is the bag they give you to put your clothes in? will a small rucksack fit in it?

Good Luck!!

Ermm my aunt runs lots of thenm maybe 2 or 3 a year - she just came back from Paris and she'll be doing the london and Great North Run too I think.

She says it's all about the willpower - you can do this, you can do this, you can do this.

She's npt particularly quick I dont think does them in about 3.45 but she is nearly 50 and only started doing them a few years ago.

I'll do one . One day ey? ;) :p

Good Luck to all you runners , looks like weather is holding up , enjoy it , it will change your attitude to the whole day , watching the marathon on telly will never be the same again , you will feel the pain they are all going through everytime you see it. I don`t mind admitting that for the next couple of years it brought a tear to my eye :D

keep on running .............................

that sounds pretty quick to me. i'll be lucky if i can get round in that time and i'm only 29.

Parts of the route in the docklands are deathly quiet with not many spectators - it is also the place where most runners hit the wall. You'll help a lot of runners if you stand along there and cheer them on.

Apparently the bag is quite big so you should be okay.

Rain to start with by the sound of it. Bugger :( Oh well. Running in the rain is way better than camping in the rain ;)

Have a good one. See you here Monday so we can compare notes :D

The bag they give you is a large plastic bag, a bit like a bin bag but white.

good luck fuzzy and biffo (and others if I've missed them) I'm very much in awe of people that run the marathon, there's no way I could even contemplate it - hurray for having a dodgy knee that puts me out of the running - ho ho  :D

I'm not too sure if I'll be going to watch, as my daughter has to be with her cheerleading squad by 9am  though if I do go along to help supervise them, I get to go to a posh after race party with all the celebs that are running - celebs or a lie in? I can't quite make my mind up yet ;)

if I do go, I shall make a sign with "fuzzy" and "biffo" on it :D

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!!!

it's so impressive that you've even got yourself doing the training, congratulations!

was just going to check on their website where would be best to go watch...am thinking docklands...what time is good to be there? anyway, good luck, you CAN do it, have a lovely rest tonight.

rain is wet, but it's refreshing and it hasn't been too cold, so it will probably be nice and keep you from overheating.

:)

good luck!

Hope it goes well today for everyone - got my fingers crossed for you.

I ran the Paris marathon two weeks ago (4:09 - was well chuffed) and it was the best thing ever - hope you enjoy it as much as I did! :)

well i managed it. I got round in 4hrs 17 minutes. i'm really pleased with both my time and the fact i got round. i ended up walking and running the last 6 miles as my legs really had gone by 20 miles. it was an amazing experience and i really enjoyed the crowds and the whole atmosphere of the day. my legs are suffering a bit today but they'll heal and then i'll think about getting out running again. i was so impressed with the whole organisation of the event. getting your clothes in and back was so easy as was picking your number in the first place. all in all a fantastic experience and i'd heartly recommend it to anyone whether a serious runner or not.

You have your own congratulations thread you know

we're all very proud of you :)

I cried quite a bit yesterday - I'm such a soppy cow. I was cheering at 14 miles and at 22 so hopefully you got a cheer off me. You must be really chuffed - that's a brilliant time too :)

Well done Fuzzy. Glad you enjoyed it. It was a great day despite the rain. The crowds were brilliant all the way round. All the bands and pubs with megaphones and sound systems were a real spur too. Fair play to all the fancy dressers as well. Running was hard enough but dressed up must have been even worse. Big respect to all ;)

I got round in 4 hours 6 mins. I was a bit disappointed I didn't achieve my sub 4 hours target but had a brilliant day. My body aches today but not as much as yesterday. Don't think I will do another marathon. 2 has been enough but never say never I suppose. I'm doing the Great North Run in Newcastle in October - 47,000 runners! Off for a gentle 5 miler tomorrow evening.

well done biffo. i'm going to leave off running for at least a week and then i'm going to start thinking about another race. when do you have to enter the great north run?

Cheers Fuzzy. The entries for the GNR closed a couple of months ago but I think you can still get a place through a charity if you raise £300 for them (+ £37 entry). It should be a good day with that many people running (13,000 more than yesterday). The official website is

http://gnr.realbuzz.com

Good idea to rest for a week but don't leave it any longer or you may struggle to get out again. That's what I found last time. Good luck with it mate.
