ok.. after a number of pms.. this is the sort of info I've been sharing..
The yoga-y class I went to was something called body balance - and was a mix of yoga, pilates and tai chi - I thought it was going to be 45 minutes but it was an hour when I went. The teacher, Li-Leng obviously knows what she's talking about. She's female, tiny and seems to be able to bend herself into all kinds of knots. It was pretty challenging in some areas and I'm pretty sure one would get very strong pretty quickly after regular attendance.
I am a beginner and I've never gotten on with yoga type stuff, I really do prefer fast, sweaty type stuff and I'm always trying to do more "holistic" type classes but just get frustrated with it. There was a "relax" type bit at the end with soft music and no lights etc. I really ought to go back but the lure of the spin is too much for me...
There is one particular guy called James - a massive, beefy black guy with a little belly who is bloody brilliant. His spin classes are absolutely great - I've done a lot of spin (I'm really into cycling) and his classes are amongst the best I've done. The spin studio is actually part of the rest of the gym - although it's separated by screens. You wear headsets and the teacher and music is heard through earphones (it's worth bringing your own). If you have cycling cleat shoes you can clip yourself in too. Personally I could have done more work on the leg side and if you cycle regularly you'll probably find it fun but not too much - the bonus of course, is that it gives you a good upper body workout out too and the other people in the class found it quite challenging I think.
His body pump class is also good - mostly it's because he's very good at getting people going and has a great teacher presence. On the flip side I went to a weekend class by someone called Elisio - who was very nice, but not a great teacher - probably a very good personal trainer, especially if you're male though.
I haven't tried any of the others yet.
It's dead friendly, I've already bumped into a few people I know there, but also met women from going to the same classes repeatedly - which is really nice.
There is quite a few uber-glam people there, but also a good selection of "normal mortals"...
