The Lido gym

ok.. after a number of pms.. this is the sort of info I've been sharing..

The yoga-y class I went to was something called body balance - and was a mix of yoga, pilates and tai chi - I thought it was going to be 45 minutes but it was an hour when I went. The teacher, Li-Leng obviously knows what she's talking about. She's female, tiny and seems to be able to bend herself into all kinds of knots. It was pretty challenging in some areas and I'm pretty sure one would get very strong pretty quickly after regular attendance.

I am a beginner and I've never gotten on with yoga type stuff, I really do prefer fast, sweaty type stuff and I'm always trying to do more "holistic" type classes but just get frustrated with it. There was a "relax" type bit at the end with soft music and no lights etc. I really ought to go back but the lure of the spin is too much for me... :D

There is one particular guy called James - a massive, beefy black guy with a little belly who is bloody brilliant. His spin classes are absolutely great - I've done a lot of spin (I'm really into cycling) and his classes are amongst the best I've done. The spin studio is actually part of the rest of the gym - although it's separated by screens. You wear headsets and the teacher and music is heard through earphones (it's worth bringing your own). If you have cycling cleat shoes you can clip yourself in too. Personally I could have done more work on the leg side and if you cycle regularly you'll probably find it fun but not too much - the bonus of course, is that it gives you a good upper body workout out too and the other people in the class found it quite challenging I think.

His body pump class is also good - mostly it's because he's very good at getting people going and has a great teacher presence. On the flip side I went to a weekend class by someone called Elisio - who was very nice, but not a great teacher - probably a very good personal trainer, especially if you're male though.

I haven't tried any of the others yet.

It's dead friendly, I've already bumped into a few people I know there, but also met women from going to the same classes repeatedly - which is really nice.

There is quite a few uber-glam people there, but also a good selection of "normal mortals"... :)

You mean people working out in not-matching, non-branded gym wear?

Well I saw a very glamourous woman in there the other day wearing leggings with tiny hot pants over the top and then a matching cropped one-shoulder stripey top - gorgeous hair, makeup etc.

I looked at my too large, baggy tracksuit bottoms and scruffy t-shirt and felt a bit rubbish... :( :D

In that case I shall have to join just to make you feel less rubbish - I run/exercise in ill fitting cropped cargo trousers from somewhere like Primark and a variety of t-shirts from a pj harvey one, my liverpool shirt or a faded carhartt number. Not to mention the pink hiking socks which make running infinetely more comfortable!

Yeah, sorry about that. One of my cross gender days. :D

i see that girl also whenever I go.... wish I looked like her!!!!!

Anyway off now to LIDO to work off last nights cocktails!!!

Still no sign of yoga or pilates!!:(

We went to have a look yesterday and were so impressed we signed up on the spot! It helps that the Rec is such a shambles at the moment, I didn't feel too guilty about abandoning it.

Apparently the classes are about to change - too much spin and not enough pilates, apparently.

BOO!!!!

(There is already pilates and yoga - once a week - and that body balance twice a week - but there's definitely something else going on there - is it not the old yoga classes - 'cos the usual legions of ladies carrying yoga mats don't seem to have diminshed)

The old yoga classes are still on, but they cost extra (8 quid, ffs). I don't think one pilates class a week is enough, personally, (it's on a Saturday afternoon as well - not massively conveninent) and there are about three spin classes a day at the moment. They're not proving as popular as expected apparently. :)

agreed! they should have a yoga and pilates class everyday (gym is all about convenience and a good selection isn't it) and they will win me over in no time as well.

i fancy applying for the winter month to make use of sauna and steam room. however not at all interested in the gym and spin etc so the classes shedule would need to be more eclectic for me.
(can someone tell them that please ;) )

Yep not enough yoga and pilates.... trying to get there now...howevr warm in a caf.....mmm methinks I am lacking discipline!!:p

i got a shock today having to walk through the gym building to get to my hippi yoga class.

of course i saw gajingirl looking brilliant on one of those stepbikes. the place is really orderly which appealed to me and clean etc.

however i am not a gym person in terms of machines as mentioned before so i might stick to yoga class only. i need it relieve stress for the week. since i am a stresshead

:0

the lido is still filled with water btw and it looks lush!

(does and imaginary head dive into it)

Juast got this email:

Hi,
I have been following your threads about Brockwell Lido with great interest. It seems that people have a lot to say to Fusion and BLU about the pool and the new gym, classes etc.

It would be great if you can come to the Lido annual meeting next Saturday, 13th October, at the Lido, 10am-12 noon (coffeee and cake from 9.45) There will be reports back from Fusion and BLU and plenty of opportunities to give your feedback on this season and ideas for the future.

i don't know if i mentioned on here before how cheaply (both in material and workmanship) the gymnastik rooms have appeared to be done up a few month ago..?

because now, only a few weeks into the brandnew make up of the lido the floors are all uneven and bouncy. there is one big wave there everywhere creacking and it needs to be redone.

i think it is unbelievable. anyone ever heard anything about good quality material (they should use parket) and work around here?

sorry but this inefficiency really really drives me mad!!!!!!!!!!!!

(anyone heard about brixton skatepark which is currently being resurfaced once again, after it had been resurfaced end of 2005 already!!!)

how could they employ a company that clearly has no experience in creating floors for a sports room??

it doesn't go into my head??

I went there last Tuesday morning. Feckin tiler was retiling some of the hydrotherapy pool. Needless my plans to relaz were scuppered!!!
Finishing are terrible.

Sorry to hear about the gym shortcomings. I went to the BLU AGM yesterday and none of these were mentioned by Fusion.

The main headline to come out of the meeting was that Fusion plans to open the pool from the start of May until the end of October next summer :D

The 'wet' changing rooms were recognised as being inadequate, and the next area of re-development will be the cafe.

More thoughts and pictures over HERE.

WICKED NEWS ABOUT THE LIDO!! I saw you all from inside the gym at the AGM and felt a bit guilty about not being there. It is still hugely frustrating working out in there and seeing all the glistening water on a sunny day... :(

I haven't noticed the finishing in the gym being bad at all - but I'm not terribly observant like that. The class timetable has changed and there seems to be more pilates and yoga and also more variety within the other classes too.

ETA and a Christmas Day dip!! That would be absolutely perfect - together with the Christmas day bike ride and then the Christmas Day glutton-fest...

heaven!!

I went for a tour around the gym on sunday and was pretty pleased with how quiet it was. Surely it's generally busier at the weekend (always was at Fitness First in Brixton) but there were plenty of free machines.

Everyone looked pretty "normal" too - not all beautifully honed gym bunnies AND there wasn't any intimidating beefed up blokes around the weights area. Classes timetable looked good too.

Am pretty certain I'm going to join - there's a special this month of £10 joining fee rather than £40 and if you sign up for 12 months it's about £40 a month. I'm sure I could easily stop wasting a tenner a week that would be better spent getting myself healthy.

Anyone here got any thing else to add? No horror stories I should now about classes or facilities or anything else?

Dont forget, if you are a teacher/school staff emplyed by the borough you can probably claim a discount on membership, we get it for council leisure facilities in Redbridge.

I'm a member and finding it very relaxing and simple to use - can't wait for the summer when the Lido is included within membership.
