It's easy to hate the strokes for the media hype and the tidal wave of unmitigated shite that followed in their wake (something one might call the 'Nirvana effect')
not that i really follow the pop music but did the Strokes have loads of bands who sounded like them follow after?

The Strokes. I find it hard to discern why there's even a debate.

They're both deeply derivative bands anyway, so it's a bit like comparing two bad photocopies and saying which one is best.

Indeed, in the case of the Strokes it should be 'Sounds almost exactly like the Velvet Underground'.
well i know it's an obvious point but all music is derivative then. And, I am listening right now to the Strokes and am a big fan of the Velvet Underground, I don't get the "exactly like the velvets" thing at all, there's loads of other bands they sound more like.

Yeah, i thought that was an odd one too
"a bit like the Velvets" would be more like it.
and " a bit like the modern lovers" and so on.
the strokes don't sound exactly like anyone - they sound like a lot of great old, New York mainly, music mashed together.

oh, and The Cars - they remind me of The Cars quite a lot.

Which I doubt they'd be pleased about.............................

Strokes - enjoyed their first album, but it was just plaster and paste New yoooork new waaave, maaaan! Everything else since has been lazy lazy lazy and no fun.

Libertines - I hated the first album, quite enjoyed the rageddy arseness of the 2nd. and thought it bounced along enought to get by.

I vote Strokes for having produced the best album out of both bands output. Neither have made anything classic.

yeah i pretty much agree. their 1st album anyway is pretty varied, i don't kwo the rest.

they've got bits of Wishbone Ash in there too for me at points... i bet they'd love too hear that! but it is actually a compliment

Musically I'd go with The Strokes but if it came down to good old fashioned fistycuffs my money would be on the Pete & co.

I think I only liked 'Reptila' by the strokes and it's just cos the riff. They're a bit too style over substance I reckon

"conceited opinion"? i was just saying they don't sound like garage rock, which it sounds like you agree with me on, i haven't read the NME since about 1993 so i don't knwo about that bit.

Sorry wasn't only directed at you, probably shouldn't have been. I used a misapplied term in derision towards the hype thrown at these two bands, I don't think I phrased it so well.

Why? It's an inordinately bad tune.
It captures the band perfectly in that moment, the Twat-Barât duet works fine as always and has catchy guitars. It's a fun song, hardly a desert island record or something, but still enjoyable.

No idea, but I've watched a couple of interviews (online) with Pete Doherty and I found him funny and down to earth.
Down to earth? On all his interviews he sounded and looked like he's floating someplace else :D

if it wasn't for the Strokes desperate A&R men wouldn't have been scrabbling around East London looking for scraggly junkies in Leather bomber jackets.. so therefore no Libertenes.
