The Levellers and New Model Army appreciation thread

Don't know too much about NMA. Only really got to hear them through Stig. Have nothing particularly against em, though. Two of their (fairly hardcore) fans who post occasionally here are friends though :) and they drink good beer so that's

The worst thing about NMA were the fans. I used to like the music around the late eighties, but all that dancing in circles and hitting innocent people, wtf was that about?
Clogs & Authentic Celtic Band, why?

That was about a "hardcore" of their fans being utter wankers.

Put me off going to see them. Last thing I want at a gig is to have to deck someone for being anti-social at me, but I ended up doing it twice at NMA gigs (and once at a Meteors gig, but that's another story).

NMA good, Levellers so-so.

I remember buying Bitter Sweet and then Vengeance when they first came out and seeing NMA on the 'John Peel Road Show' with Joolz and, I think, a band called Twenty Flight Rockers at Southampton Uni.

I was writing for a local Time Out-type listings mag at the time. NMA were the first band I "interviewed". They were delightful, especially Justin. I was a fan, nervous, a wee bit pissed and sweaty from the gig (so much for objective music criticism!). I interviewed The Sisters a couple of weeks after and Wayne Hussey was the complete opposite. That was a learning process for a 17 year old - my 'heroes' had feet of clay.

I thought and still think that it fell off the table for NMA after The Ghost of Cain.

I know that Levellers may not be everyone's cup of tea (I know of at least three friends who can't stand them) but you cannot deny their heart isn't in the right place.

You've already expressed my opinion for me, ta tom  Bager decoy likes 'em though

I'm sure their heart is in the right place, but I'm interested in music for music's sake not for their politics, I quite like slayer but I'm pretty sure they're right wing fuckers equally I don't like seize the day, in fact I'd quite like to shut them all up permanently

as I've said before on here, I'm completely unapologetic about the fact that I love the Levellers :)

they make me smile, they make me dance, they make me laugh and sing, they put on a good show and a damn fine festival every year.

if you don't like them that's your prerogative but you know, bollocks to what you think, I think they're great :)

pretty much my thinking too.

what I call good happy jumping up and down after a few ciders music

I used to love the levellers, but I can't imagine that I'd ever listen to them out of choice again.

NMA only briefly held my attention and again, wouldn't listen to them now (apart from when milesy puts them on, and that's not my choice!).

and Tarantism, the fuckers.

What is it about them & festivals?

Can't they stay away? I've lost count of the number of times they or various members of them have pitched-up unnanounced at some festival or other & got a set - Never mind the lady, who seems to have carved-out a sideline in MCing festivals too.

they asked my mate - who has managed several bands of that ilk - if he'd manage them.

He took a moment, and then explained that he was afraid he wouldn't be able to.

"are you too busy?"

"no, you're too shit" :D

I'm listening to New Model Army right now cos of this thread and I'm really enjoying it.

I am 18 again :)

I still remember every single word :o

do you base that on the lyrics to Angel of Death or is it summat else? Only the controversy over that song always struck me as the usual anti-metal hate rather than based in any sort of sensible argument.

Badger Decoy is very sensible btw :) Tell her to come to BD with me next year :D

I loved them, the first 2 albums especially. I listened to them at a time when I was getting ready to make a big change in my life, which turned into a catastrophic but an epiphanic and totally liberating change I'm happy to say. They had a definite influence over the beginnings of that. And for that, I'll love them forever, despite disliking everything after the 3rd album :)

nah, i've heard numerous stories about Slayer over the years... they could just be stories, i guess, but i don't think it's just based on Angel of Death

fair enough, don't pay much attention to the people behind the music tbh

Love the Levellers (although the last couple of albums have been dire). NMA I can take or leave.

had a quick google, found out that Silent Scream is about abortion (from a pro-life perspective) and that they have admitted to being right wing from the point of view of society/justice issues. Can't find a lot else.

Don't surprise me, I like a lot of metal but I don't especially like many of the people making it. I think that's why I drifted away from it in hindsight.

Tarantism are truly terrible, they're the Achilles Heel of Embarassment for anyone otherwise sound and sorted about the extreme hippy wing of festivals ...

<hides>

<in extreme embarassment about being such a Hippy-Traveller oriented Festographer, despite in reality disliking Tarantism pretty much as much as Dub does ... >

Kerry King of Slayer once want said in either Metal Hammer or Kerrang! around 2002 that he would rather not get into a lift with someone he knew was homosexual.

The Levellers were great untill after the first album they lost it big time after that before that they played loads of bennefit gigs for allsorts including one for ASS the squatters advisory service which the bass player said was one of the best gigs he had ever played even though he went stright to casualty after pissing blood :( and they even employed me and a mate to make their first video for 'only one way' but that was when they started to loose their street cred.
As for New Model Army any one who starts a big festival gig in the Basqe country with 'viva espania' in the 80s when it was seriously Basqe nationalistic must be seriously thick. They got botteled of stage without playin a single tune :D And anyone who names their band after one of the biggest mass murdering armies of this countries history has to be seriously ignorant I dont know the numbers but in Ireland Cromwell massacred millions of people :(

I used to love NMA and went to the all gigs with one of the people I believe you're referring to who I have known since I was 4 years old and have lived with. As well as her boyfriend since she met him. They have keys to my flat. I also used to go to all the Levellers gigs. I was really into them both. But my tastes have changed now and aren't likely to change back because old mates drink a particular beer... :D

I base it on nothing more than what a guy down the pub/rave/rock club told me :o I certainly have no anti-metal hate.

BD is very sensible on many things but her love of the levellers is not one of them, you've already stolen wiskey and dervish away just before we moved to london, now you want to steal my girlfriend too?  :D

I wouldn't mind, but you want to take her to see such crap bands it seems very wrong.

All that said lots of good friends(e.g. tom A who started this thread) will probably be there and I'm very much behind the ethos of the festival if not the orgainser's own music and I'd quite like to go so maybe I'll be there, maybe with BD if you're lucky.

Will I like it if I liked the BGG?
