The League One (Div 2) Thread

Five wins in a row, first time since 1995 when we finished 3rd in the Prem....still just outside the play-offs, today was tense, holding on to a 1-0 lead for 75 mins isn't easy, well done Holty and the rest of the lads.....now to beat Yeovil on Monday....

yet another bloody defeat, tho we sounded as if we played decent. Still, we're al but safe, and a win for Rotherham means another easy game to get to next season.

Well, if Tranny are all but safe then so are we. 4 points from two games against sides at the top. One more win, as soon as possible please....

Incredible atmosphere at the City Ground yesterday, 4th highest attendance in the country as well, and we got the result we needed to at last get into the play-off places. We deserved the win for our resilience after going 1-0 down to a dodgy quickly taken free kick (For the record I think that rule needs to be seriously looked at. For a direct free-kick it just doesn't seem right that a player can take it before the wall is ready and the whistle blows. It also just doesn't seem like good sportsmanship to me).

Gary Holt has been a revelation for us the past 10 games, a totally different player to the one we saw during Megson's reign of terror where he was a huge dissapointment. The whole team gave it everything yesterday, now if we keep hold of this play off position I think we've got a more than realistic chance of going up.

Reason why? I think the reason why this division has been so open this season is because the standards have been pretty low. Not all, but most of the teams have shown a shocking lack of consistency. Forest have been guilty of it as much as many of these clubs. But the fact is, despite playing some of the worst football played by a Forest team during Megson's time, we have still managed to find ourselves in the position we're in. It doesn't surprise me. We do have a bit of an unfair advantage in this division to pay big wages, and we've attracted quite a few high quality players, such as Tyson, Holt, Breckin, Southall, Bennett etc. Under the right management it should have been challenging for automatic promotion from the very start, and most likely achieved it.

Who knows whats going to happen in the last 3 games - Hartlepool is going to a tough one considering their position at the moment, guess we'll have to keep hoping that Barlow and Charlie can keep delivering the goods.

Have to say it's a shame, it looked like you lot were on the verge of becoming a real presence in the midlands a couple of years ago and your ground is looking good. I'm sorry to say also that you were the worst team to visit bloomfield all year. Not necacerily the poorest performance, but the most half hearted. I thought you looked like a team that had a bit of skill in it but was bereft of any confidence and desire. I'd like you to stay up with obvious disclaimer that it's not at our expense.

Cheers TD, Blackpool will stay up for sure after a battling performance against Brentford. I'm sure the seasiders will get the win that will keep them in League 1. Any info on the Latvian businessman who has bought the club from the Oystons?

Meanwhile for the Saddlers we were unlucky to get a draw against Port Vale. Although Vale's equaliser had a high suspicsion of offside during the build up!Then yesterday lost 1-0 to Donny Rovers and with Rotherham's and MK Dongs* results meant that we are rock bottom. Relegaton guaranteed, especially if we lose the next match (depending on other results) on Saturday.

Even though it was 2-3 seasons ago Walsall were in the giddy heights of just outside the top ten in the Championship. But the wheels came off when Colin Lee got the sack after a bit of a falling out with Chariman Jeff Bonser.

I'll mention Bonser, with reference to not getting rid of Paul Merson (Bonser was pally or matey with this fella) after the debacle of losing to Slough Town in the Cup last season, instead of 2/3rds of this season. Thus two years of bad decision making has cost this club to progress and develop.

Explanation - The fans want answers Mr Bonser!!

Although to be on the positive side i'll look foward to seeign Accrington Stanley or possibly Hereford or even Grays Athletic in League 2 next season!

*I'll have a big smile on my face if MK Dongs get relegated and into League 2 next season!

Blackpool will stay up for sure if we win one more!!! A massive well done to Larry and Tony Parkes, they've not made us world beaters, but I think had they been there from day one we'd have had a comfortable mid table season. The quality of the squad is terrific seen as he had January to sort it out. Players like Marcus Bean, Marc Joseph and Gareth Williams look like they belong in this league, instead of the league below. Should be an interesting pre-season. We need a bit more in midfield, a partner for Clarke and a striker and a left back. If we get most or all of them in the form of decent players we have every chance I think. Only blot on Grayson's copybook is his love affair with Jason Wilcox who surely must be released at the end of the season.
As for Valeri Belokon, he hasn't bought the club, but become a significant shareholder and has been told by Karl Oyston that he can have the chairmanship (apparantly.) He is a football fan from what I am told and wants to use the club to promote his beer. Apparantly we can look forward to the construction of the south stand and some investment in players. I hope he leaves Larry alone to do his job though. Don't fancy another HEarts situation. The oystons have had the club for 20 years and taken it not much further forward to be honest and though I am guarded about the latvian, I am also a little bit excited. The Daily Mail quoted a £20million figure in terms of investment, I believe the true figure to be a lot, lot less. Still it's a long time (10 years) since we splashed out in any meaningful manner on players and an extra million goes a long, long way in leage one. I only hope growth is measured and expectation isn't ludicrous. I would rather do a Preston than a Rotherham or a Walsall (sorry!). The potential is there at the pool, but we need to do it gradually.
