The last sign that Labour have well and truly lost it?

Oh it's had a beneficial effect all right - on managers and consultants' wallets.
Well, between 1997 and 2007 the NHS is Scotland did see more 700 more doctors and 5000 more nurses employed in Scotland's hospitals, and they are more highly paid than they were before. But waiting times are down despite a huge increase in numbers of operations and hundreds of millions of pounds have gone to pay for new hospitals and GP surgeries. Since 1997, numbers of knee joint replacements went up 79%, cataract operations up 38%, hip joint replacements went up 28% and angioplasties went up by 153%. Deaths among people under 75 from cancer went down by 15% since 1997, from strokes by 40% and from heart disease by 45%.

Despite these achievements, delivered by Labour-led administrations in Westminster and Holyrood, we lost the election and ended up last year with one less seat than the SNP, whose only real policy is to pick a fight with Wesminster, and which is now trying to implement a programme that is already seeing big cuts in spending on public services in localities which benefited from Labour's programmes during the past ten years. On the other hand, they are going to paint the trains blue and put big flags on them.

How very Ba'athist that sounds: "Anyone who's against us MUST be a supporter of our political enemies!".
Only because our political opponents, people like you, are liars. Are you a nationalist?

As for losing it, the opposite seems to be happening.
A YouGov poll for The Sunday Times reveals that the Scottish National party (SNP) has lost its lead over Labour at Westminster as Scottish voters back Gordon Brown to lead Britain out of the downturn.

The proportion of those willing to back the SNP at a general election has dropped by five points to 29% since the start of last month. But support for Brown among his fellow Scots has rocketed, with 38% of those surveyed saying they would vote Labour, a rise of six points.
Early days, though.

Early days indeed - as soon as redundancies begin to bite following Lloyds TSB's acquisition of HBOS, then Labour'll be in the lavvy again.

The only reason for the acquisition was for HBOS to get an injection of funds. The Badger's generalised bank bail out negated the requirement but Mandy insisted on the deal going through Government policy being "never mind the jobs, we must prove that Westminster is in control" - yes but only in control of creating redundancies in Scotland.

Just listen to yourself. More "only The Party is correct!" type drivel. And no, I'm not a nationalist - I'm a (proper) leftwing socialist.

Your point had been that "the free health service and public sector infrastructure has not been developed since 1997."

I have refuted the point with a few examples of more doctors, more nurses, more investrment, whch has led to really positive outcomes in terms of early deaths prevented since 1997. You might find that boring, but the Scots who have lived longer and happier lives, and their families, have reason to be grateful for the policies of Labour in government in Scotland.

Here's a few more little potatoes -

  • The number of Scots out of work is (still) down over 50% since the Tories left office. Our employment rate is at its highest point since records began and is higher than the UK average.
  • The Scottish economy had grown in every quarter over the four years before the nationalists took over.
  • Ten years ago only the wealthy were treated in the UCI hospital in Clydebank; now it’s a centre for heart patients no matter what your income.
  • Before Labour got in, 40% more Scots died from coronary heart disease and strokes than now, and 15% more died from cancer than now.
  • Our education system is (still) amongst the best in the world and only three countries out-perform us in maths, literacy and science.
  • Labour Governments and Councils were modernising Scotland’s schools by building or substantially refurbishing 227 schools since 1999, and had been on course for 300 by 2009. The nationalists haven’t built a single school since they got in – indeed they’re closing perfectly good schools, like South Primary in Paisley.
  • Under the Tories, only 62% of Scottish 4 year olds had a place in nursery – now there is a place for every Scottish 3 & 4 year old who wants one.
So there's a lot to be proud of.

But as far as "the Party strides forward!" - well it isn't. There is a lack of talent in selling the message, and worse, in developing new policies and behaviour that put our country first, which is why the nationalists have made such gains - one whole seat more than Labour. Labour has been in continuous office for too long in many parts of the country and has got lazy and complacent. God knows if we'll get our mojo, as I believe the young people call it, back in time for the next Westminster elections and the 2011 Holyrood poll.

But pointing out what we achieved, and what it has meant for ordinary people and their families, is at the heart of it.

Just listen to yourself. More "only The Party is correct!" type drivel. And no, I'm not a nationalist - I'm a (proper) leftwing socialist.
I'd forgotten about you being a (proper) leftwing socialist - sorry. But you really do sound like a Tory or a nationalist. And you persist in misrepresenting me.
