The Knife vs Jose Gonzales

The Knife or Jose?

What do you mean by missing the point?

I don't like that she doesn't sing in tune. Some artists can pull that off and sound great, but it doesn't work for me with The Knife. I've never listened to anything else by them because I hate their version of Heartbeats so much.

It's not their version though, it's their song. I dunno, music is entirely subjective innit, so each to their own.

As much as I do like Gonzales, he is music for Nanas and social workers. The Knife can do achingly good stuff, and her voice and the synth is all part of that.

Yeah, I know it was their version originally, sorry for not maing that clear. I love Jose, my favourite music tends to be acoustic singer-songwriter stuff, and I usually play in a similar kind of style to some of his songs, so I suppose it's not surprising I like him more. I hate the perception that he's boring though (I know you didn't say that but I know lots of people who do) because although it doesn't often sound like there's much going on, for me his playing is so good that you don't need anything else and there's so much intricacy in it- kind of 'less is more'. And I'm not a social worker (or a nana!):D

Jose all the way. I can't stand the woman from The Knife's voice, it sounds like what happens when I step on my cat, except less tuneful. Jose's guitar playing ins infinitely etter than that godawful synth crap in the background of the Knife's version.

I think she has a stunning voice (when they don't process it). Her best performance for me is on Royksopp's What Else Is There.

I think the main reason I dislike him is not because he's boring, but at Summer Sundae he butchered Love Will Tear Us Apart, which is a pretty much unforgivable act of heresy as far as I'm concerned.

Oh yeah, I've heard that and it's not good. It's one of the only times I've heard him playing straight chords rather than fingerpicking, I don't think it works.

The female vocals suits the music better, but the acoustic plays better than the synth'd. If anyone ever manages to mix the two, let me know.

there was a dreadful bootleg I had that cut back and forth between the two.
It could have been better executed but, honestly, it was crap and Jose did not come out of it well.

I'm shocked... as you say, well old before your time. The Knife, for me, are one of the acts of the decade.

I think you might have totally missed the point.

maybe. I think Heartbeats is certainly one of the songs of recent years, in that it doesn't really sound like anything before it and it's just glorious and beautiful and right and it can appeal to a very broad audience way beyond people who might 'get' The Knife.
I love them. and one of the reasons I do is they have a quite restricted but very unique sound world in which they operate. if you're the sort of old before your time type who can't abide that then you probably think all electronic music sounds the same anyway (or even that it's not 'real' music).
It doesn't. and The Knife have a very particular aesthetic which is wonderful.
If you're never going to get on board with that, there is a version by The Scala Choir (a 60 voice teenage girls choir - they do a great 'I Touch Myself')
which is about a hundred times better than the Gonzales version - they seem to have taken it down from their site at the mo' but a lil' internet search might help you find it..................

Jose Gonzales is awful. Music for people who are desperate to be indie and show their girlfriend they have a sensitive side. If my boyfriend liked Jose I'd drop him on the spot.

More posts like this :D

PS

The Knife are awful. Music for people who are desperate to be electro and show their girlfriend they have a challenging side. If my boyfriend liked The Knife I'd think he wasy really cool and have a haircut like it was done by a blind man with a lawnmower

;)

Gonzales is a good musician whether you like it or not, if the style of his music doesn't do it for you then i reckon his ultimate goal isn't to appeal in a way to make money....or maybe i'm just being soft.

I prefer the knives version but i have shit taste :)

Aaah the knife...

Is that the Übercool underground band that wear mysterious masks, refuse to be part of the "mainstream", never give interviews, boycott awards ceremonies etc etc...

and then sell out their song to be used in a Sony Bravia TV advert.

yeah maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan :D

I guess the argument against that would be that they didn't actually allow their original song to be used in the advert. Gonzales version is quite far removed from The Knife's, so perhaps they felt it was like a different song to them. So much so that they wouldn't feel so bad when they signed it away to Sony and rolled about in heaps of cash afterwards whilst giggling insanely.

Plus they used the money to build their own studio and label. See it as you like, but I think that's one of those "one step back, two steps forward" scenarios.

The Scala Choir version is beautiful. I don't normally like 'classicalising' of modern songs, it often sounds cheesy and derivative but they hit the nail on the head with that one.

Out of the Gonzalez or Knife version it's got to be the Knife.
