The Joshua Tree defense

While I dislike U2, I don't buy that "oooh, but their first albums were good". Bollocks, it was fucking boring religious post-punk, and pretty much the least interesting of all bands that emerged in the early 80s pre-indie days I've heard.
However, when it comes to stadium pop, they're excellent. Even if that means they're terrible :D
Coldplay are a different subject. It's the kind of music that doesn't affect me one bit, but gets played so many times on the radio that after a single day I just want to stab my eardrums. I could be persuaded into cutting them some slack if Mr. Palthrow had managed his new found A-list fame and fortune other way than becoming a massive cock.

Well see that is what i thought, everyone likes U2, and Coldplay, they just hate the media

It's like everyone liked the Beatles until they took christmas away from us

The Joshua Tree was ace of course, I even listen to the second side now, tho the first side has been played too much. Great tunes to sing along with!! Unforgettable Fire was OK as well, maybe even Rattle and Hum, but downhill from there going into occasional OK songs (like the Batman one).

Same goes for most artists, they hit a good seam of songs and then disappear up their own arse.

Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois were the backbone of U2's greatest albums, which says a lot for the need to get a great producer.

People who go on about how bad these people are for daring to produce songs which are just lovely, are like those who insist they don't like The Beatles, or even worse that they prefer the Rolling Stones!!

Or within the Beatles, that they only like the Lennon songs.

Utter crap! They just can't bear people being happy. Paul M was just a happy guy falling in love and getting paid to do a job he loved. Good for him!! :)

The best artists do a long line of good albums, not just 2 or 3! Honourary mention to David Bowie with about 6 great albums from Space Oddity to Low - Now that's genius!!! and if only Heroes (the album) had been better it would have been 'til Let's Dance!

I don't think I agree with any of that :D

Anyone who says the Beatles are shit is a fucking idiot, it's like saying Beethoven is shit imo, the prodction still stands up today, songs like Hereisnowhy and A Day in The Life are still more imaginative than any other pop music 40 years later

:D

I bet you couldn't articulate why Beethoven is so revered if your life depended on it.

Because he was an absolute genius, his music is all structured into stories, it is incredible how the guy articulated different melodies through one instrument while keeping the whole thing in harmony

you can always tell the struggle with Beethoven between going off on one like Wagner and being a 'meister' like Mozart

I bought pride when it came out.
I think I might even still like it despite the fact that they are all cunts.

I'm worried that this means it's an even better song, though I think I can put it down to nostalgia.
*does the 'I will follow' jig*

lol

i just listened to Pearl Jam as an act of defiance and I really wish I hadnt'
I used to enjoy NoCode, but I fucking hate that guys voice even more than Billy Corgan

Nah, Corgan's voice is truly grating - especially on the slow ones/"ballads" *shudders*

Nowadays I would rather listen to Billy Corgan than Eddie Vedder

He was a shit singer, but at least he had some idea about something. Vedder is just droning on and on and on

But anything other than such a tired list of platitudes? I thought not.

If you're going to play the objective card with music you'd better have some damn solid theory to back it up. But you don't of course, so stick with 'opinion' please.

You can't just bring up 'taste' to slag off unpopular bands, you have to explain why you have 'taste' and I don't, otherwise you are just another clingalong with no taste at all

Because Coldplay and U2 are the musical equivalant of beige chinos. If you wear beige chinos then of course you're gonna love them.

i just say what i think. i don't need anybody to tell me why I like or don't like music

I don't know a lot about beethoven, my dad used to listen to him a lot, and I liked it because of what i said, music isn't about theory or we would all be listening to boring stuff that nobody listens to

So they are unfashionalble so they are rubbish?

I would say they are more like levis blue jeans. They aren't that fashionable, but they are acceptable unless you are a fashion obsessed nerd

Fair point, although I'd tend more towards acceptable if you don't know any better. Those bands seem to be the default bands that people listen to if they "aren't really into music" or "like anything really". The kinds of people who own maybe 10-15 albums.

Its because both of those bands are tired and unimaginative, which reflects upon their fans.

I've got U2 albums, and I bet I own more CDs than you.

Well obviously if you own thousands of CD's then you're likely to own an album by U2 or Coldplay. My point is that they're bands for non music fans. They're the sort of CD you'd buy in Sainsbury's along with your groceries.

Well that is a different thing altogether

That is why I love mp3 so so much, because there is still room for people to go into HMV and buy whatever album in the top 10 that most appeals to them, but us nerds don't have to go into that world to hear music that means a lot to us

and we can still pay for enjoyable rubbish as well id the mood takes us...

Flip. Flop. :D

Easy targets, yawn. I bet all the people slagging them off on here would get defensive if someone mentioned a band they liked...

Although, of course, Coldplay certainly really are fucking shite. :)

Like vegetables. A commodity grown for your consumption.

Oh no I am getting all holier than thou and that never goes well.
