The Jesus & Mary Chain

My brother made me go to see them at Brixton Academy when I was about fifteen (it was a reciprocal deal so he probably had to see some metal nonsense with me) and all I remember is they only played for about half an hour and had something that has become one of my favourite songs ever as their intro music:

One of the first bands I ever saw live. They played for about 25 minutes, the lazy fuckers.

The first time I saw them was at the long gone Birmingham Powerhouse on the Darklands tour (I think, maybe a bit later). I literally had the shirt ripped off my back in the melee and had to get the bus home topless.

Were you at the infamous PNL riot planetgeli?

Yeah, side stage. My mate was on PNL exec so I used to go to gigs there for free. I was just an onlooker but my mate, trying to act like some sort of security, had to dodge a load of bottles on stage after JMC walked off (after 15 minutes, at most). I thought it was an interesting night. My mate hated it for obvious reasons, and hated them too. Then he too became a massive fan a bit later.

The best bit of video of that night is right at the end of the clip and Bobby Gillespie is whining "We just want to play music man". Er, no you didn't Bobby. Or at least they didn't. Their gigs were famous for no shows or 10 minute sets. The PNL riot was just an extension of what was already going on with JMC.

I remember it getting a full investigation by the NME. It really bought them to wider consciousness.

Dunno if you’ve seen this:

I've never seen that. Have to say I found myself agreeing with a lot of what Neil Taylor says. And there kinda was no security, which was dumb. That's why my mate was 'security'. They just put a few students up as stewards.

Time flies... Darklannds is also very good and I do have automatic but it's not of the same vintage. Haven't heard anything after that...
Psychocandy was so wonderful at the time.. a noise bomb..

Try Honey’s Dead. It’s their best for me after Psychocandy

Absolutely loved them and bought their first single 'Never understand '. I then moved onto harder stuff like Crass and flux etc.
I love heavy stuff with a psychedelic edge.
