the italian footy scandal verdict countdown thread

Juve have also been stripped of their last two scudettos - that's from the Beeb (more to come from them)

Milan -30 points
Juve down to serie b, -30 points
fiorentina down to serie b, -12 points
lazio down to serie b, -7 points

Are the two Scudettos Juve has been stripped of being awarded to the second-placed team, or left 'unawarded' for posterity?

Mourinho will be rubbing his hands with glee.

As am I, and it's nothing to do supporting any team, nice to see these cheating bastards caught and punished. Ibrahamovic is finally playing at his proper level btw.

Anyways, the four teams have until today (Monday 17 July) to appeal but my question is: why wasn't Milan relegated to Serie B as well? I've read that the reason was "not enough evidence" what a joke!

I think the relegation is fair enough but the points deduction on top is too much. With minus 30 points Juve might still go down to Seria C the following season

From what I read about the scandal, Milan were more involved than Lazio and Fiorentina and They should have gone down too.

Maybe there wasn't enough evidence, I haven't seen it have you?

On the other hand if you were being cynical you might look at their president.

Appeal Verdicts Expected Today

The appeals have been heard and the verdicts are due today. Could hear somethign this evening. I can see this dragging on, possibly delaying the start of the season.

Latest from Gazzetta...

1. Fiorentina may go to Serie A with a strong points penalty or may stay in B with less of a points deducted hit.

2. Lazio may go to Serie A with a points penalty.

3. JuveB (new name, ahaha :D ) may have their points deducted to -15 in Serie B.

4. Milan may start next season with -6/7 points and may enter the UEFA Cup.

Here's hoping. Didn't the Gazzetta get it spot on last time?

From Uefa.com:

UEFA has extended until tomorrow the deadline for the submission of the names of Italian clubs eligible to take part in the 2006/07 European club competitions.
Which means the verdicts must be delivered today. 20.00 CET apparently.

Have you read the specifics of the Lazio allegations? Don't think i've seen them....

The Milan one is;

The Italian giants were implicated in the scandal as a result of an intercepted telephone call by Leonardo Meani, a now former employee, who requested a specific linesman for the April 2005 clash against Chievo.

Milan have argued that they were “indirectly responsible” for his actions and urged the Federal Court to wipe out the first grade sentence.

I've also read that Juve have a strategy ensuring that Milan etc won't benefit from their talent - hence the "twinning" of Thuram with Zambrotta....

Lazio were alleged to have attempted to influence referees in three games during the 2004/5 season. The only one they were found guilty of was a 0-0 draw with Brescia. Tombolini, the referee for that game, has given evidence at the appeal this weekend. He has stated that if he did anything wrong that day, it was to deny Lazio a penalty which he should have given.

Seems to me that Lazio's punishment is not consistant with Milans!

The more i find out, the more it appears to be hysterical overreaction by the media in the case of the 3 other clubs...

A former Milan employee requested a specific linesman...
Lazio tried to influence a ref who made the mistake of not awarding them a pen in a 0-0 draw....

Does this sort of thing not happen in every league in every country?

Revised punishments for the Italian Quartet in the match fixing scandal...

From the Beeb sports Revised punishments

Juventus: relegated with 30 point penalty; now still in Serie B but with 17-point deduction

AC Milan: Were allowed to stay in Serie A but with 15-point penalty; now still in Serie A but with eight point deduction and put back into Champions League! - But it does help to have a media mogul & ex-prime minister of Italy owing the Rossoneri!

Lazio: relegated with seven-point penalty; now put back in Serie A with 11-point deduction

Fiorentina: relegated with 12-point penalty; now put back in Serie A with 19-point deduction.

Appeals process not over yet, either.

By the sounds of it, they'll just keep appealing til they get the "punishment" they feel is appropriate.

So, not an utter fucking farce, or anything, then.

:)

Seems right that Juve pay the biggest price due to their involvement and Lazio and Fiorentina get re-instated to Serie A

and again! :D

Bet you're chuffed?

Absolutely! Looking forward to next season now, it wouldn't be the same without the Rome derby.

Still puzzled about exactly why Lazio were punished, but I suppose when it comes to Italian justice it's better just to accept it. It's a shame they won't be in the UEFA Cup as they did brilliantly to qualify last season when a lot of people were tipping them for relegation, but at least they are back in Serie A.

The Inter fans are moaning that we're in the Champions League (albeit in the qualifiers) already;

"if they appeal again, they will probably let Milan play from the Champion's league quarter finals" :D

Bet Zambrotta is wishing he didn't disappear so quick....

Juve's punishment appears more reasonable now. At least they have a chance of going back up after 1 season, although it's gonna be hard.

To a team that's the defending CL winners and double league winners, without having to pay referees - made perfect sense to me :D :D :D

God, you're serious.

Well, if we're going to allow people to bribe officials without fear of serious reprecussions, we may as well just start handing out medals and trophies to the people with the most money, power and influence now and fuck the troublesome messing around with irritating things like beating the opposition by being better than them.
