3. ?

This is all taking shape now.

You ever seen any of the bands people are listing, or are you just mouthing off?

The idea of punk awards is bizarre in itself...

But -

UK - Conflict (can't pick the Clash cos of how it ended and 'Cut the Crap')

Aus - The Saints

Japan - Boris

USA/Rest of World - Black Flag

Total Global Domination - Black Flag

but we all know foreigners can't punk. except italians, but that's only to do with the uniforms and shouting.

That's not only true, it's pretty funny.

Seen them? What, live? No. Mummy wouldn't let me out that late.

No, no - I'm just being punk as fuck, with all that that entails. Going to the salon tomorrow to get my hair respiked. It's starting to flop. I can't wait!

I am punker than all of you.

Me and my mates thought about starting a band once!

Please don't tell me to fuck off you silly little nerd. ;) They are not far behind for me.

No one is going to rate your opinion if you can't express yourself without coming over like a twerp.
Surely anyone could see Hi-ASL was being daft?

MEthinks the punk doth protest too much...

(see what I did there?)

Best American: Black Flag

Obviously, there's no real point in arguing tastes in music, but I'd put Minor Threat & Bad Brains above Black Flag, tbh. And, if we're stretching genre boundaries a bit, the early recordings of Husker Du, Meat Puppets and The Minutemen. Ah well.

Great bands, great tunes, some great people - but MT and BB were never on the same level as Black Flag in any meaningful way. Maybe if BB had stayed the course... ' Build A Nation' just picked up where they left off.

e2a - good to see someone mention the Minutemen. (((D Boon)))

One complication to this thread is ARE WE TAKING THE BANDS ENTIRE OUTPUT INTO ACCOUNT?
The Clash first LP was great , the 2nd really good, London Calling had some good songs, but after that they were abysmal...so if we take an average i guess they WERE average
And if we take SLF...first LP great, 2nd not far off, third ok, 4th dreadful...and 3 out of 5 reformation LPs dreadful

Good point. See my first post, and I have. 'Cut the Crap'

The more recent SLF stuff is truly awful. Probably one of the worst 'come back' releases from a band of that period, IMHO.

Flags and Emblems had 2 or 3 excellent songs and their last one a few years back had a few good songs, but christ the other 3 were dreadful. I even said this to McCallum and you could tell he knew, all he said was "it was aimed at the American market" i think
He was our barman at the local bikers club. If it hadn't closed i think i woulda suggested going back there rather than risking another "Get a Life" or "hope Street"

...and that's the sad thing about it. I know (only on acquaintance terms, not best mates) another 'star' of that period, dragging his arse and band round mid-sized venues in Europe and toilets in the UK. He says the same thing...guess it pays the rent/pension plan.

The grim reality i guess. Keeping it going for money...but if i was in a band that could get away with it i certainly would rather than work in a shithole...mind you i could still write better songs than that!

Thing is Mccallum is a good bloke, always friendly, but before SLF discovered him he was a pub singer/guitarist NOT a punk

Never met the fella, but my mate Tutty says he's ok.

Hmm. Make so-so music, or go work in an office all day (or warehouse, building site, shop)...no-brainer, I guess!

That sounds a bit cheesy (my last post) but what i meant is you need 4 people with proper punk attitude and tastes to make good records. Good musicians are not enough (as we know by all these lame Fat Wreck wannabes)

I agree. Punk is easy to play, but surprisingly difficult to play well or convincingly. I use the (obviously non-punk) exampe of Status Quo...easy to thrash 12 bars, difficult to do it like them...

:o @ Quo example

e2a - Ramones would be a better example than Quo. :D

UK = of first wave ATV were IMO by far the best punk band. Always loved X Ray Spex too but they didn't really record enough to be in the running.

of later 'wave' obviolusly Crass, though i'd say i probably prefer Discharge & Rudimentary Peni musically.

best US = Flipper. never liked any 'hardcore bands' and always found jello Biafra's voice irritating. Liked some Chrome stuff too but they weren't really a punk band per se. Oh and always thought Wayne County had some brilliant songs.

:)

Says the John Robb fanboi... :D

Flipper. :hmm: They're still spoken of in hushed tones...but I never got it. Will go and listen to some now. Thanks for the reminder!

Best British: Sex Pistols. The originals. Has to be really, although The Clash aren't far behind.
Best British Female punk: X Ray Spex. Awesome singer.
Best American: The Ramones.
