Farewell Indy then. I was only an occasional reader but I do remember when it first started up being optimistic about an independent editorial line in a paper. It did one good thing and that was to introduce a radical new style with its photography, moving away from the standard visual cliches current in newspapers.
Put simply it was the technique of moving back from a subject and showing the context rather than the normal method of getting in close or zooming in for dramatic effect.
Perhaps one good thing with the demise of this paper will be the freeing up of a bit more advertising revenue for the other ones. It is the reduction in income from advertising that is at the root of the appalling state of our press. It is a pity it is not the Mail or Sun that has gone down.
I remember The Independent starting up. It was seen as a challenge to The Guardian at the time. Then it sort of became seen as the equivalent of the Guardian for southern readers. I never really took to it preferring the Guardian or the Mirror in my newspaper reading days.
Agree about the Sun. The sooner that shit rag is gone the better.
