The Independence Day is a brilliant film thread

TBH I was very disappointed with MA too. I remember really enjoying the first half, and found the Aliens so hilarious when they emerged, and then it just sort of petered out.

Mars Attacks is fucking brilliant all the way through

it's got Jack Nicholson as the president and Tom Jones as himself

that alone makes it one of the best films ever

IIRC correctly Tim Burton kept as many details about Mars Attack! secret as possible before it premiered. As a result thousands of punters went to see it expecting to see another serious, special effect-laden dramatic alien film... They got a bit of a surprise.

I remember a critic describing Mars Attack! as the world's most expensive prank :D

I love it myself.A great spliff film.

Mars attacks is ok .Independence day is a terrible movie but briliant fun
no one should do the speech (unless their going to launch into a battle with an alien horde when you could get away it though your followers would still be sniggering behind your back imho)
Battlefield earth is pretty dire .

As I said, when the aliens first appeared, it was funny as fuck. I just think it didn't do as much with the concept as it could have done.

I was expecting a parody/homage to 50s B-movies. It was that, just the story was lacking, IMO

Independence Day is on Film4 at the moment - I never really noticed before because they kind of slide right past it, but the president's press secretary lady caused the deaths of millions of people by hanging up on Jeff Goldblum the first time he called to warn her about the invasion. She seems totally cool with it too.

That's a bit shit blaming it all on her, press offices get crank calls all the time, deliberate calls that are taking the piss, and lots of lonely people who might not be fully with it.

When I was working at MAFF, do you think every call I took from a persistent caller claiming to have a cure for rabies/BSE should have been put through to the Minister?

Of course not.

There's a basic triage on unsolicited calls/letters/email/advice. And usually if it sounds fucking far out there and whacky it doesn't get through, there's a point where the call doesn't get any further up the line - that's just how it works. It's actually pretty much the reason for the existence of low grade employees and press offices in government settings.

It wasn't a crank call though, it was her ex-husband who she knows is an expert signal detection guy. And the second time he tried, she pulled the president out of arguably the most important meeting in history to listen to him, so she clearly had some idea he should be listened to.

Yeah yeah there's always an ex-spouse with someone in the presidential press office, that doesn't make it more feasible :D

I think I might have bought a (reduced price) copy of this, in a moment of madness. Then again, I also paid to see it at the cinema for the lols.

It's a great b movie and, while not up there with Starship Troopers and Mars Attacks!, is still good fun for a couple of hours. Despite some blatant borrowing from other films. Or maybe because of.

I've never seen the sequel. Not because of nonsensical "worries" that it may somehow "ruin" the original (not sure how that happens) but just because ID4 is enough. For me.
